Important Updates from DCF: Child Safety Alarms & Background Screenings * |
|
SB 252 by Senator Linda Stewart (D – Orlando) creates the “Child Safety Alarm Act” and requires that after January 1, 2022, all vehicles used by childcare facilities to transport children must be equipped with an approved alarm system that prompts the driver to inspect the vehicle for the presence of children before leaving the area. This change is in response to reported deaths of small children who have been left in vehicles during periods of hot weather. The bill requires the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) to adopt minimum safety standards for reliable alarm systems and maintain a list of alarm manufacturers and alarm systems that are approved to be installed in vehicles.

DCF Child Care Licensing Requirements & Site Changes If your background check and fingerprints are up for renewal, please ensure to obtain Level 2 screening as outlined in s. 435.04, F.S., is required for all child care personnel and includes a criminal records check (both national and statewide), a sexual predator and sexual offender registry search, and child abuse and neglect history of any state in which an individual resided during the preceding 5 years. All fingerprints must be submitted and processed through the Background Screening Clearinghouse and therefore a LiveScan vendor that is Clearinghouse compatible must be used for submission of fingerprints. Background screenings may be obtained in advance of their expiration date to ensure there is no lapse in coverage.
SB 252 is effective on October 1, 2021.

The Children’s Trust stands with all the victims of the Surfside building collapse on June 24 and is committed to helping victims, their families and friends navigate the traumatic aftermath. Theater Implementation Course Now in Trust Academy |

Good news for Youth Development programs using the Reader's Theater curriculum! Playbooks Reader's Theater Implementation webinars have now been made into a course in Trust Academy. You no longer need to contact Reader's Theater and search for their webinars on their website. Open your account in Trust Central, click into Trust Academy. In the Course Catalog, look in The Children's Trust Courses category or search for Playbooks. Watch all three videos and pass the course to earn your certificate |

Count Me In: Discovering Inclusion for Kids - Learn fun, meaningful activities to do with your summer camp students to build their disability awareness, and encourage them to appreciate differences.
Structures for Success - Youth both with and without disabilities can behave in challenging ways. Learn the 7 basic needs youth exhibit and take away strategies for meeting these needs through positive, preventive approaches. This training is especially relevant to YEN and YAS Providers.

Project RISE Introduces Two New Members of Coaching Staff |
|
Amy Gallup, Project RISE's new Associate Director of Instructional Coaching, has nearly thirty years of experience as an educator, having served as both a teacher and administrator in both the private and public education sectors.
Stacy Silverman, RISE's new Associate Director of Youth Development, brings over two decades of experience in social work, adult training, coaching, and he has been involved with the Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality since 2002.
Both Amy and Stacy are interested in coming out to programs to see the wonderful work your program staff is doing. They can complete an observational assessment (using the Mini or SEL-PQA) to help your staff refamiliarize themselves with these assessments as we move into the next academic year. They will be reaching out to programs all summer long, so be on the lookout for a phone call or email.

Available Mental Health Services for Low-Income Families * |
The Institute for Child and Family Health (ICFH) provides mental health services including Individual/family therapy and psychiatry for children and adolescents in Miami-Dade County. The institute accepts most Medicaid HMO’s and has funding for children of low-income families who do not have insurance. ICFH also provides individual/family therapy and psychiatry services for adults who have Medicaid.

DACA and TPS Assistance for Immigrants |
Americans for Immigrant Justice and partners are offering immigrant youth eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) free assistance with their applications. DACA allows individuals who were brought to the US as children prior to June 15, 2007, to be safe from deportation and receive a work permit for renewable two-year periods. Anyone interested in receiving assistance with their DACA application can fill out this online form to be contacted, or call 305.573.1106 extension 1400. All information is confidential.
In January, President Biden extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Venezuelan immigrants currently in the United States undocumented. TPS provides protection from deportation and work permits for approved applicants. Americans for Immigrant Justice, the Office of New Americans, and partners are holding free monthly clinics to assist Venezuelans in applying for TPS. In May, Haitian nationals were also extended Temporary Protected Status. Those who were in and have remained in the U.S. since May 22, 2021, may be eligible to apply.
