Friends of the Library Book Sale - on February 7, February 8 and February  9  at 6123 Central City Parkway, Meeting Rooms A and B. Join us for our quarterly book sale! The Preview Book Sale, is a chance for members of the Friends of the Library (or those interested in joining) to get first pick at this month's sale. The Book Sale will be open to the general public on Friday, February 7 and Saturday, February 8, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. On Sunday, February 9, 2020  from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. you can fill a bag with books for just $4.00! City of Westland to Hold A Recycling Town Hall - On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Mayor Wild and the City's Administration will hold a town hall meeting to update residents on the current status of recycling and answer questions relating to the upcoming sanitation fund ballot proposal.  The town hall will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the Mayor Gene McKinney Grand Ballroom inside Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Road.

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location: 
  • Norwayne Community Development Citizens Advisory Committee (CDCAC) Meeting will hold a meeting on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. at Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center located at 32150 Dorsey Road.  Please click here for the agenda.
  • Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA) will hold a meeting on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Road.  Please click here for the agenda.
  • Fire and Police Civil Service Commission Regular Meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. at Westland City Hall located at 36300 Warren Road. Please click here for the agenda.

The Westland Youth Assistance Program will be holding Strengthening Families Workshops for Parents and Children on Mondays, February 3, 2020 through March 23, 2020.   These are free sessions with different topics:  helping families learn to communicate better, avoiding peer pressure, building positive relationships and other topics.  The sessions are to be held at Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey St. Please call (734)467-7904 to register for this 7 week program.    
 
"Show Me the Money Day" - a free financial and community resource fair to help you reach your goals.  This event will take place on Monday, February 10, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Jefferson Barns Vitality Center, 32150 Dorsey Road.  This event will feature workshops on financial topics, vendors including banks, credit unions, local organization and community resources.  Enjoy food, fun and prizes.

Focus: Hope Senior Food Program - Tuesday, February 11, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. at the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center located at 31250 Dorsey Road.  The food boxes offer seniors (60 years and older who meet the federal low income guidelines), a nutritional low-sodium diet to supplement their daily food needs.  If a senior meets the eligibility requirements, he/she is able to pick up his/her first month's supply on that day. In order to be certified, a senior must apply in person and bring the following:  proof of age; identification and income, number of people in household.  For more information on signing up at Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, contact Focus:  HOPE Commodity Supplemental Food Program at (313) 494-4600. 

Blood Pressure Screening - Stop by the Westland Friendship Center for a free blood pressure screening on Thursday, February 13.  Blood Pressure Checks are done from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. by the Westland Fire Department.  It is an excellent way to keep track of your blood pressure.  The Friendship Center is located at 1119 Newburgh Rd.

Family Prom Night 2020 at Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center located at 32150 Dorsey Road, on Friday, February 14, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  There will be a DJ and Square Dancing, arts and crafts, snacks and drinks.  The first 50 children will receive free school supplies.  The cost for this event is $5.00 per family.  Please RSVP at 734-793-9390. 

William P. Faust Public Library Hosts a Family Movie on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 1:00 p.m., at 6123 Central City Parkway, in meeting rooms A and B.  This week's movie is Artic Dogs, rated PG.   Swifty the fox discovers a devious plan by Otto Von Walrus to drill beneath the Arctic surface to unleash enough gas to melt all the ice. With help from his friends -- an introverted polar bear, a scatterbrained albatross, a crafty fox and two paranoid otters -- Swifty and the gang spring into actio n to foil Otto's plot and save the day. No registration is needed and light refreshments will be served.  

SAVE THE DATE - Hockey Night in Westland - Mayor William R. Wild, along with his Westland Wild Wings, are once again getting ready to lace up their skates to challenge the Detroit Red Wings Alumni in the 11th Annual Hockey Night in Westland charity event.  The event will be held on Friday, March 20 at the Mike Modano Ice Arena located at 6210 N. Wildwood St.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. our very own Westland Hockey Mini-Mites and Mites will take the ice to show off their skills.  The alumni pre-game fun will start at 7:00 p.m. and the puck drop will take place at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12.  (Kids 5 and under are free).  Tickets are available for purchase at the Mayor's office, the Mike Modano Ice Arena, North Brothers Ford (33300 Ford Rd.) and online at https://westland.ticketleap.com/2020-hockey-night-in-westland/ .
