City is Collecting Supplies to Help the Bahamas Recover
The development and building of Coral Gables is owed in great part to the skill and labor of Bahamian immigrants to South Florida. New generations of these pioneer families still reside in Coral Gables in the areas known today as the MacFarlane-Homestead and Golden Gate subdivisions. The City of Coral Gables appreciates their contribution in our early history and is helping our friends in the Bahamas recover from Hurricane Dorian. Fire Rescue is collecting relief supplies and donations at all of the City’s fire stations. Please note that only these items will be accepted: water, canned goods, can openers, mosquito spray, sunscreen, diapers, baby formula, first aid items, flashlight. Read more.
And the Survey Says...
Last year, the City of Coral Gables mailed a citywide Community Engagement Survey to thousands of local family homes and condominiums to gauge the level of service we are providing and to find out the overall resident satisfaction. And the results are in: An outstanding 95% of Coral Gables residents rate quality of life in The City Beautiful as Excellent or Good , citing the city’s central location, neighborhood feel, safety, and more. View the entire survey results.
Coral Gables to Challenge Appeal Court Ruling on Polystyrene Ordinance
At last week’s Commission meeting, the City Commission voted to allow the City’s legal team to continue defending the City’s Polystyrene Ordinance and appeal the recent Third District Court of Appeal’s ruling . The Commission also adopted a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to repeal Sections 403.708, 403.7033 and 500.90 of the Florida Statutes, reject any other Statutes that inhibit a local government’s ability to regulate expanded polystyrene or single-use plastic bags, and requested the Governor’s assistance in this effort. During the pendency of the appeal, the Commission urges businesses in the City to continue protecting the environment by not resuming the use of products made from expanded polystyrene or of single use plastic bags.
