Ice-in has been declared on Newfound, and this means ice fishing is finally in full swing. Did you know New Hampshire's record lake trout was caught in Newfound Lake? That was over 60 years ago! Go put your bob house on the ice (or embrace the crisp winter air) and see if you can pull up the next
trophy-sized laker
. Newfound Lake also made
Game and Fish Magazine’s
list as the place to catch “monster rainbows”.

Ice fishing etiquette (and the law!)
- Take your trash, waste, and supplies when you leave. Litter left on the ice will eventually make its way into the lake in the spring, potentially polluting the lake.
- Petroleum products from heating, power augers, and ATVs that spill onto the ice are toxic for aquatic species and can even trigger toxic cyanobacteria blooms.
- If you need to build a fire, do so in a fire-safe container. Ash from fires made on the ice contain high levels of phosphorus which leads to algae growth and reduced water quality of the lake.

Once you've pulled up your prize, indulge in an on-the-ice picnic:

Climate Change Spells Trouble for Anglers
If prized ice fishing lakes don't ever freeze to safe levels, or if they freeze later and thaw earlier, opportunities to drill a hole and drop a line become fewer and farther between.
