Associate Professor Teri Finneman spoke to various media outlets over the weekend about the historic election of U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris to the vice presidency. Finneman is author of "Press Portrayals of Women Politicians, 1870s-2000s." She spoke with KMBC in Kansas City, KOMU in Missouri, the University Daily Kansan and the Professor Buzzkill History Podcast. Knight Chair Steve Wolgast helped report vote tallies on election night for The Associated Press. He was one of more than 300 stringers working remotely to get election results from all 3,141 counties in the country. Wolgast was assigned the job of “web scraping” results from four counties in South Carolina, seven in Wisconsin, and five in Idaho, collecting the latest ballot counts from county clerks’ websites. The stringers worked through the AP bureau in Spokane, Washington, and communicated with them through Slack. They posted updates in AP’s vote tracking software (on the left in the image below), and took phone calls through an Amazon internet phone line (the blue box on the upper right).

J-School scholarship application is open now
|
Each year, we accept applications for School of Journalism scholarships. All students admitted to the J-School are encouraged to apply. Last year, we distributed more than $600,000 to our students. Students who receive KU renewable scholarships should note that the School of Journalism will likely be funding those scholarships during their junior and senior years. Even so, additional funds may be available, so those students can still apply. Applications are due Dec. 15. Recipients will be notified in April 2021, and scholarships are for the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 academic year.
Apply here (click the red Sign In button at the top, then log in with your KU online ID and password). You may be asked to complete a general application question before moving to the School of Journalism Undergraduate Scholarship Application.
Scholarship workshops: Join us for a writer’s workshop to help fine tune your writing skills, learn helpful grammar tips, and how to best tell your story in 400 words or less so you can fill out the scholarship application with confidence!
