Associate Professor Jerry Crawford
was an invited participant and panelist for several online forums and webinars for the Gardner Institute:
- March 31 session: “Coronavirus Campus Crisis - Pandemic Pivot: Adjusting & Adapting.” The topics included communication in a crisis, insta-teaching/working in crisis, equity and access, best practices for online teaching and learning, and demonstrating grace and self-care.
- April 8 session: “The New Advising Reality”
- April 15 webinar: “HBCU Response to the Coronavirus Crisis”
Associate Professor Jerry Crawford
’s article, “High School Journalism Advisers and Diversified Newsrooms,” has been accepted for print in the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Journal of Media Education (JoME) April 20 online publication. This study examined whether African American participation in high school journalism is lower than participation of other students in the state of Kansas. Past research has found that participation on high school newspapers and yearbook staffs is often the pathway for students to consider careers in journalism.
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas
has had accepted for publication a chapter in a forthcoming book on live-streaming. Co-authored with Texas A&M law professor
Brian Larson
, the chapter is titled
“
Fixed? The Law of Live-Streaming.” It is a summary of how live-streaming is regulated by both the law and by corporations and includes a discussion of the current law and ethics of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Section 230 is under attack by victims’ rights advocates as creating an online haven for sexual abuse and harassment, but the law enabled the growth of the interactive internet as we know it today.
Lisa McLendon
, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, was invited to present
one of four sessions for a virtual day of the ACES: The Society for Editing conference
on May 1. The annual national conference was canceled due to COVID-19. McLendon’s session, Grammar Arcana, delves into some of the lesser-known areas of grammar. Other sessions will discuss dictionaries, the editing process, and updates to the AP Stylebook. Registration is free and open to the first 1,000 people (ACES members or not).
A research paper on misinformation and vulnerable populations written by
Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo
, doctoral students
Matt Blomberg
and
Darcey Altschwager
, and
Assistant Professor Hong Vu
has been accepted for publication in New Media & Society. Entitled “Vulnerable Populations and Misinformation: A Mixed-Methods Approach to Underserved Older Adults’ Online Information Assessment,” the paper is based on a survey and interviews of low-income minority seniors on their evaluations of health information online.

Jonathan Shorman
