DEA moves some CBD medicines off Schedule 1, a limited expansion of cannabis access
It’s a decision that immediately affects CBD producers but also signals the agency’s first admission that the plant has medical value.
The DEA announced Thursday that drugs including CBD with THC content below 0.1% are now considered Schedule 5 drugs, as long as they have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

CMS launches app to outline services covered under Medicare
CMS has
launched
the "What's Covered" app to let
Original Medicare
patients and caregivers see whether Medicare covers a medical item or service.
Original Medicare is coverage managed by the federal government. Generally, there's a cost for each service.
Consumers can use the app to more easily get accurate Original Medicare coverage information in the physician's office, hospital or anywhere else they use their mobile device.
The app is part of the CMS eMedicare initiative launched last year to provide beneficiaries with cost and quality information.

Limited Benefits of TNF-α Inhibitors for Chronic Low Back Pain
Anticytokine treatments may be ineffective in alleviating
chronic low back pain
with or without sciatica, according to a systematic review published in
Pain Medicine
.
For this narrative literature review on the use of biologic agents for low back pain and sciatica, investigators used search terms that included anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF), anti-nerve growth factor (NGF), and growth factors, yielding a total of 10 studies.
The use of TNF-α inhibitors to reduce and improve pain in chronic low back pain with or without sciatica was not supported by results from the randomized controlled trials and the meta-analysis that were reviewed. Results from observational studies indicated benefits associated with TNF-α inhibition for pain reduction.

Characteristics of Physicians Excluded from Medicare Reimbursement Programs Examined
During the 10-year period between 2007 and 2017, a noticeable increase in the number of physicians excluded from Medicare and state public insurance reimbursement participation due to fraud, waste, or abuse was observed, according to results of an analysis published in
JAMA Network Open
.
Older male physicians who practiced family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, or surgery were more likely to have been excluded during this study period.
Physicians who were excluded from Medicare and state public insurance programs between the years 2007 and 2017 were matched to a cross-sectional database provided by Doximity. Study researchers evaluated the share of physicians who were excluded in each US state and also examined linear trends of exclusions during the 10-year period. Physician variables, including legal factors (eg, fraud, health crimes, and substance abuse) and characteristics (eg, age, sex, allopathic vs osteopathic degree, medical school attended, ranking of that medical school, medical school faculty affiliation, practice state, practice location, and specialty) were also examined to identify factors associated with exclusion.
