UROP STUDENT
SPOTLIGHT
Shannon McWaters,
UROP Student 2018 - 2019
Shannon is a freshman with an International Affairs major currently researching the impacts of social media on high school students' sense of community. This project is headed by Dr. Stacey Rutledge and Dr. Vanessa Dennen of FSU's College of Education.

Shannon says, "Performing research at the college level for the first time can be confusing and hard to understand, so I have really enjoyed being able to have the opportunity to enjoy research without the stress of understanding everything on my own."

Shannon believes UROP is extremely helpful when it comes to her professional goals as it has improved her academic writing skills, problem-solving abilities, and confidence in sharing new ideas. This is why she would 100% recommend UROP to other students as it takes away the confusion of researching on your own and provides guidance and help from experienced professors/advisors willing to teach!
UROP LEADER
SPOTLIGHT
Ayanna Camara,
UROP Leader 2018-2019
Meet UROP Leader Ayanna Camara! Ayanna is a 3rd year double majoring in Political Science and History and minoring in French. This Palm Beach, Florida, native has a deep and unwavering passion for research. Her first brushes with undergraduate research started with UROP her freshman year.

Under the guidance of PhD Candidate Jesse Klein, Ayanna’s first research project entitled “Men and Women of Honor: Examining the Portrayal of Gender Roles in American Comics” focused on social movements in the 20th century that helped shape the backgrounds and stories of characters from notable comic books. Since then, Ayanna has continued her involvement in the research community by sharing her experiences with a new generation of researchers by becoming a 2018 - 2019 UROP Leader. Additionally, as an Undergraduate Research Ambassador with SCURC , Ayanna works behind the scenes by helping students interested in research find their footing.
