Count the Region 2020 Census Initiative Launched

April 1, 2020 is Census Day,and the Community
Foundation has launched a "
Count the Region
" initiative to help get out the count for the 2020 Decennial Census, making sure everyone living in Northern Virginia is counted, counted once, and counted in the right place.
The stakes are very high. The data collected by the Census determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. It also determines the allocation of billions in federal funds to local communities for such programs as Highway Planning and Construction, National School Lunches, Head Start, WIC, SNAP, TANF, Foster Care, Title 1 Grants, Federal Student Loans, and so much more.
For every Virginian who is not counted, the state/region loses $2,000 per year for 10 years, or $20,000 total, in federal assistance program allocations.

For all its growth and wealth Northern Virginia is home to many people who find it nearly impossible to climb the economic ladder from poverty or near-poverty to improve their individual or family's socioeconomic status.
On March 7th, we held the 2019 Shape of the Region Conference in partnership with the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and the Northern Virginia Technology Council. This year's theme presented a strong argument that there is a "Business Case for Economic Mobility" if Northern Virginia is to continue to thrive in the future.

We recently released our 2017-2018 Annual Report, "Celebrating 40 Years." Since 1978, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $50 million dollars in grants and scholarships. And more recently, we have emerged as a civic leader that helps the community define, and then act on, the biggest challenges we face and the greatest opportunities we have.
The report highlights major milestones, including the launch of the campaign to grow
The Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia, a community endowment that will be a forever source of critical support for our most vulnerable neighbors.

Despite the fact that Northern Virginia is growing region with a well-educated population and strong economy, the 2016 data, culled from a variety of publicly-available resources, reveals rising income inequality, increased numbers of residents with less than a high school diploma, and a growing number of cost-burdened households in our area's largest growing population segments. At 49%, the region's minority-majority transition figure reflects an increasingly diverse community. We hope that this data will help grow philanthropy for our most economically disadvantaged populations.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia opens its annual Healthy Kids Grant Cycle for the 2019-2020 school year. This grant opportunity helps public schools encourage healthy lifestyles through increased exercise and better nutrition.
Grants up to $2,000 each are available to individual public schools in Northern Virginia that implement a program or strategy to encourage better nutrition or more activity among their student body during the school year.

Nonprofit are invited to join us on Wednesday, May 8th at 1 pm for a webinar to learn about changes to the 2019 Giving Circle of HOPE collective grant cycle. Grants will open on May 17 for Northern Virginia nonprofit organizations. Requests for proposals will close on Friday, July 19. We are accepting applications in the focus areas of:
1. Health, Mental Health, and Aging.
2. Poverty Relief
Applicants have the option of applying for either a Project or a Capacity Building grant. Full descriptions of both grant types are detailed on the application, along with the criteria for both focus areas. The maximum grant award is $7,000.

Rod Harrell, a donor advisor for the Rachel Harrell Memorial Fund, made a legacy gift in 2013 to help launch the Rachel Harrell Memorial Fund

We asked him to share some thoughts on how this fund helps honor his wife's legacy.
Why did you choose to establish the Rachel Harrell Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia?
When my wife passed away in 2013, I felt a compulsion to do something to help others in a way that would honor her. We (Rachel's mother and I) looked at several options, including starting a foundation. It became apparent quickly that this was not realistic. With a requirement to have a board of directors and a long process to become recognized as a 501(c)(3), I became discouraged. Then, through a local attorney, I heard about the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. Giving up some autonomy to gain the substantial benefits of partnering with the Foundation through a donor-advised fund seemed like a perfect compromise. Thus, the Rachel Harrell Memorial Fund was born.

Joel Brown, is a donor advisor for the XMS Fund, which supports youth, education, health and community improvement. We asked him to share some thoughts on how this fund helps those in need.
Why did you partner with the Community Foundation on your philanthropy?
When my Merrill Lynch advisor recommended the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia to me almost 20 years ago. They spoke very highly of the work the Foundation did for the community and some of the great organizations they helped support. You learn very quickly that there are a lot of very good causes that need our support and Community Foundation is very helpful at researching and recommending where donations are needed.
