Steering Committee Activities
The Steering Committee is working on several major initiatives to acquire new members, retain and renew members and develop a sustainable membership engagement strategy.

To that end, we are creating a new structure for our Membership committee, offering more opportunities for our members to participate in leading various initiatives.  Our intention is to ensure that we are providing as much value as we can to our membership throughout the region.

We have also offered the opportunity for members to learn more about how they can become involved.  Our first membership engagement happy hour will take place on March 7 at 5pm.   Our Steering Committee members will be sharing their experiences in TTN leadership and how they've benefited by becoming more involved, including the opportunity to "Pay it Forward." There are many opportunities to become more involved in the planning and execution of one of our activities.

Our December Holiday Mingle was a huge success and it has become clear that we need to increase their frequency not only in Philadelphia but in Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties as well. Look for more information next month.  If you'd like to get involved in organizing a Mingle, contact Lorraine Gordon ( [email protected]).

Last month Joanne Bowes and Jane Siegel conducted a leadership development workshop for our SIG leaders. The purpose of that workshop was to provide the group with best practices in managing group dynamics.

As of this month, we are 425   members strong.  We anticipate that 2019 will be the best year yet for our members.

Programs for Personal Growth
The Programs Committee just held our first activity of 2019, an intimate conversation with Deb Spungen about her new book, Table for One: Essays from a Widow's Journey. This is just one example of programming that touches our members in profound ways, focusing on educational topics that bring new perspectives, personal growth and so much more.

Next up on February 13th will be a two hour workshop on    firing up the 7 areas of your brain most associated with Creativity . If you're trying to resolve pressing, pesky and persistent "problems" in your life, this would be a great investment of your time. You just might see a new a path forward you previously had not considered. TTN Member, Aili Pogust, is steeped in this topic and will be our facilitator.

Increasing Resilience is another area which can result in being more satisfied with life, more forgiving towards others, happier and more optimistic and better at managing stress. We all notice as we age that everyday changes as well as bigger challenges just keep coming.......changes in career and/or purpose, friendships, health, even loss of loved ones. The On Resilience Introductory Workshop on March 20th and the Conversation Series (April - June) may be just your ticket to strengthen your resiliency muscles. This On Resilience Program is research-based and can help you meet the demands of staying strong and growing as a person through whatever our long futures may bring.

To be sure future topics are hitting the needs and interests of a growing body of TTN lifelong learners, please let Marsha Yankelev ([email protected]know what areas you'd like to discover and explore.
SIG Corner:  SIGs Beat the Doldrums
Winter doldrums? Not for the Special Interest Groups of the Philadelphia Chapter of TTN! We continue to grow with two new groups taking off while a third unique and newly forming SIG is looking for kindred spirits.

Cookbook Cuisine is a new Center City potluck lunch group.   Members will meet in each other's homes to enjoy a delicious lunch based on the recipes of the selected cook or cookbook. The group meets on the first Monday of the month at noon.   There's still room to join this group of women interested in cooking and camaraderie. Contact Mary Clifford at [email protected].

Another film group joins our popular movie club offerings. This group is based in Center City and meets the third Tuesday of the month around 1:00 PM at one of the Ritz Theaters in town. Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down will view a film chosen by a member and then head to a nearby restaurant or cafĂ© to discuss it.   If you're interested in participating, contact SIG Lead Kathy Sullivan at [email protected]. Hurry, because our film groups fill up fast!

Do you play the ukulele or would like to learn? A ukulele-playing member of TTN is looking for others who play and would like to be part of a jam band. If you don't play, you'll be given info on teachers in the area and can sit in with the band to pick up tips while taking lessons. The group will meet monthly on a Monday or Wednesday afternoon in Center City or Wynnewood.   Contact Joanne Bowes at [email protected] to be included.

Many of our SIGs are still open to members and waiting for you to be a part of them. Our Open SIGs include:

Our 2019 grants cycle is off and running!

On January 9th Grants Committee chair Ann Lipshutz led an orientation for the members who will choose the five finalists for our $25,000 grant. Among those attending were nine women who are new to the Committee this year.

On January 14th, the Philadelphia Foundation sent out our RFP (Request for Proposals) to nonprofit organizations serving the needs of women and/or children in Philadelphia. We will be considering innovative programs to develop or enhance collaborations with at least one other nonprofit organization to advance the well-being of this vulnerable population. We expect to receive over 40 applications by the March 1st, 2019, deadline.

While grant making is our focus this season, we realize that it is only made possible through a yearlong fundraising effort. This year we have formed three new committees to support this large and vital undertaking: Member Engagement, Public Relations and Special Events. If you have an interest or expertise in any of these areas we invite you to contact Carol Cunningham [email protected] to learn how you can contribute.

We wanted to bring to your attention two opportunities to further understand your cognitive fitness:

AARP Staying Sharp

Offered as an AARP member-benefit, Staying Sharp follows guidance from the Global Council on Brain Health (GCBH) , which provides trusted information and recommendations that empower people to take positive steps to maintain and improve their brain health. Convened by AARP with support from Age UK, the GCBH is an independent collaborative of scientists, health professionals, scholars and policy experts from around the world who are working in areas of brain health related to human cognition.

Staying Sharp is a program that provides evidence-based information and actions you can take to maintain and improve your brain health as you age. Choose from articles, recipes, activities, videos and fun brain games designed to fit into your daily routine. In addition there is an option to take a 30-minute brain health assessment.

ABC: The Aging Brain Cohort Study, Penn Memory Center

Join the largest and most comprehensive research effort in the nation aimed at better understanding Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, and healthy brain aging - and, ultimately, at achieving a healthier future for all. The ABC study is a major brain-aging research program sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). ABC collects ongoing individual data from volunteer participants at each of 31 NIA-funded Alzheimer's Disease Centers (ADC) across the United States. The data is used by scientists across the nation and the world. It is an invaluable resource for research into Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment and life-long brain health.

The Penn Memory Center, a NIA-designated ADC since 1991 and the only such center in our tri-state area, is looking for base-line, healthy-brain participants for this study. As a participant, you will provide critical research data through annual (once a year) evaluations and optional MRI and PET scans.
