House Keys Not Sweeps Factsheet Release

What are sweeps?
1. The forced disbanding of homeless communities and removal of homeless individuals from an area.
2. The threat of force, arrest, citation, and/or destruction of property to coerce homeless communities to disband.
3. The theft or destruction of property, including vehicles.
4. Or any combination of the above
Sweeps fracture communities, displace people, and damage physical and mental health.

They regularly result in the loss of life-preserving shelter and medication, trauma for those being removed, and tickets, citations, and/or convictions that act as additional barriers to housing stability.

These sweeps are conducted by governments with no plan to house or adequately shelter displaced residents, and sweeps siphon public funds away from effective, long term solutions to homelessness.

What are anti-homeless laws?

"It's scary how common it's becoming," said Paul Boden, a homeless advocate with the Western Regional Advocacy Project, when asked about the pro-Trump demonstrators' message.

"This election is going to be like this," Boden added, gesturing toward the chaos and shouting from demonstrators and counter-protesters at the building. "This isn't going to be intellectual nor political. They feel they're losing and they’re going on the attack - and they've been on the attack for a while."

3 Ways HUD Is Using Regulatory Attacks to Dismantle Fair Housing Protections

More than 50 years after the passage of the Fair Housing Act (FHA), the ultimate goal of the law-to eliminate all forms of housing discrimination and end residential segregation-is still far from reach.

Residential segregation persists among African American home mortgage borrowers, whose neighborhoods also experience racial disparities in home appreciation.

Renters of color continue to struggle in the face of increasingly high rents. People with disabilities, people of color, and LGBTQ people are all more likely than others to experience housing discrimination.
