April 2019

April is a time of rebirth and new beginnings. If your New Year's health resolutions have fallen by the wayside, spring is your chance to start anew.

As we celebrate World Health Day on April 7, commit to making natural, healthy choices to bolster your overall wellness. Whether it be replacing junk foods with clean foods, tossing the painkillers and choosing chiropractic or acupuncture instead, or switching from chemical- laden personal care or cleaning products to essential oil-based alternatives, opting for natural therapies and products will benefit your family, you and the environment as well.

We wish our patients celebrating the upcoming holidays a very happy Easter and joyous Passover.

Yours in Health,
Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds
Greening & Cleaning Your Life

How safe are the products you use on a daily basis?  Do you recognize the items on the list of ingredients?  Many of us are diligent label detectives when it comes to the foods we purchase,  keeping a close eye out for ingredients like trans fats or high-fructose corn syrup.   But, when it comes to cleaning or personal care products, oftentimes these product labels are not given the same level of scrutiny as food labels; many consumers erroneously assume that popular shampoos and cleaners sold have been tested and proven safe.

It's important to realize that everything you put on your skin -- your body's biggest organ -- enters your bloodstream.  The makeup products you use, the soaps, deodorant, perfume, shampoo, conditioner and body washes either support your health or damages it!

Being an informed consumer is the best way to protect your family from toxic chemicals that are hidden in a multitude of products.  Choose products that are free of endocrine-disrupting parabens which are linked to cancer and reproductive toxicity, and makeup that does not contain cheap fillers like talc and bismuth that can negatively affect the skin. Be vigilant about what you expose yourself and your family. Use green products and don't be fooled with 'green washing' by manufacturers who mislead consumers into thinking that products are environmentally friendly.

Here's a helpful shopping tip: Download the 'Think Dirty' app to your phone and scan product bar codes while shopping to learn about the ingredients in beauty, personal care and household products before you make a purchase.   You can also visit the Environmental Working Group website for a Shopper's Guide to ascertain the toxicity exposure in the foods you buy.

Your Couch May be Killing You: Hidden Chemicals in Furniture Create A Toxic Home Environment

You buy only organic foods, use essential oils-based cleaning and personal care products and avoid Teflon cookware -- all to protect your family's health. Think your home environment is toxin-free? Think again. There may be hidden chemicals lurking in places that never before crossed your mind.

A Duke University study of 857 children and adults has found dangerous chemicals in 90 percent of participants, attributed to flame retardants in couches and phthalates in vinyl flooring. For young children, levels were found to be even higher due to hand-to-mouth behaviors. Exposure to chemicals released from furniture and flooring can occur via inhalation, ingestion or dermal contact and can cause neurodevelopmental delays, endocrine and thyroid disruption, reduced IQ and attention span.

For sofas and mattresses, choose non-flame retardant foams like natural latex, wool cushions or organic fabrics; avoid particle board furniture which emits formaldehyde. Opt for solid wood pieces instead. For indoor floors, ceramic or glass tile, wood or linoleum are "green" options to vinyl flooring.   Minimizing house dust, increasing ventilation in the home and washing hands before eating are simple steps you can take to also reduce exposure.

Remaining ever-vigilant to every product you bring into your home, from food to cleaning products to shower curtains and your den couch, can help minimize your family's risk.  Not sure where to begin? Call our office for some helpful starter tips to green your environment.  631.265.1223.

Autism Linked to Many Common Pesticides

Pesticide exposure to children in utero or during the first year of life may increase the risk of autism, according to a new study.

Researchers studied the effects of  11 commonly used pesticides on 3000 children born between 1998 and 2010 in a highly-sprayed area in California's Central Valley.  Data showed that 10-16 percent of women who lived within 1.2 miles of the sprayed area while pregnant were more likely to have children diagnosed with autism.

The results of the study underscore the need to reduce exposure of pregnant mothers and infants to pesticides to protect the developing child's brain.  Other studies of household gardening pesticides and insecticides have also found an increased risk in birth defects such as oral clefts, neural tube, heart and limb defects.    Raising awareness may help to change practices and agricultural policies  for those living in areas vulnerable to heavy agricultural spraying, and also serve as a warning to women to eliminate use of common pesticides and insecticides while pregnant.

Harvard Study Finds ADHD  Drugs Can Lead to Psychosis in Some

Diagnoses for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are on the rise, and so, too, are the number of prescriptions to treat the disorder.

New research from Harvard University and McClean Hospital has found an increased risk of psychotic episodes,  such as hallucinations, delusions, agitation, and aggression, in the few months after starting the drug.   The government-funded study examined prescription data for  amphetamine ADHD drugs by 13 to 25 year-old patients.  Data showed that a subset of the sample group received a new-onset psychosis required a new antipsychotic medication prescription within 60 days of beginning the amphetamine medication regimen.

This new study sheds light on safety concerns for pharmacological treatment of ADHD.  Currently, there are a wide array of therapies available to help alleviate the symptoms of ADHD that do not involve amphetamines or other drugs.  Pharmaceutical manufacturers place millions of dollars into advertising budgets; their ubiquitous billboard, tv and print ads attempt to persuade the public that "one pill can do it all."  As this study shows, oftentimes there are severe, unwanted side effects.  If you or a loved one has received an ADHD diagnosis, contact our office for information on how to manage ADHD effectively -- without medication.  631.265.1223.
