Beads Abound at BCM
From Rituals to Runways:
The Art of the Bead
Opens TOMORROW, Feb. 4
At last, we are ready to re-open our doors and we can't be more excited about our newest exhibit! From Rituals to Runways: The Art of the Bead features four glamorous beaded costumes worn by pop star and fashion icon Cher, along with fascinating examples of beads used in religion, commerce and culture throughout the centuries. This printed jersey gown was worn by a pregnant Cher for the opening number of "More Today Than Yesterday" on The Sonny and Cher
Show in 1976. Embellished with iridescent bugle beads and white and sapphire colored shimmering glass, the dress is a work of art by Hollywood designer Bob Mackie.

The exhibit, opening on Tuesday, February 4, will celebrate the art and integral roles that beads have played in society over the centuries, from prayer and devotion, to art, fashion and décor. They’ve been made from wood and stone, bone and tooth, glass, plastic and gemstones – all of which are represented in the exhibit, which runs through May 10.

The closure affects the part of Devou Drive between Western Avenue and its intersection with Rotary Lane and Haven Gillespie Boulevard within Devou park. The project involves the rebuilding of the stormwater collection system and is estimated to take nearly a month to finish.
