Live Today! US Equestrian and USHJA Joint Town Hall
|
|
US Equestrian and the USHJA will host a joint Town Hall tonight,
June 8, at 5 p.m. ET to discuss key topics relevant to hunters and jumpers as we begin a return to competition amidst our new COVID-19 environment.
The Town Hall will be open to members of US Equestrian and USHJA and will be held via Zoom. We encourage registrants to submit questions in advance through registration.
Panelists will include:
- Mary Babick – President, USHJA
- Lizzy Chesson – Managing Director of Jumping, US Equestrian
- Bill Moroney – Chief Executive Officer, US Equestrian
- Katlynn Sacco – Director of Competition Licensing, Evaluation and Safety, US Equestrian
- Kelsey Shanley – National Breeds & Disciplines Program Manager, US Equestrian

Important Changes to 2020 USHJA Events
Due to the competition suspension and COVID-19, changes have been made to various USHJA Championships, Finals and events.

For this year only, the two byes that are awarded to the Champion and Reserve Champion of the WCS will be awarded upon the conclusion of the Southwest and Northwest Regions final member events. Two invites to the 2021 Palm Beach Spectacular will be extended, one invite per region, to the rider with the highest accumulated Regional points from the Professional, Amateur Owner 3'6" or Junior 3'6" categories.
Regional Invitations to CCHS Challenge Classes will be extended to the Top 10 riders in each category. CCHS will accept the top four to six from the regular divisions that are not pre-qualified through the Regional or National standings for the Challenge Classes.

- The South Championship held during the NCHJA Annual Horse Show on June 24–28 will now be held at Bruce’s Field at the Aiken Horse Park in Aiken, South Carolina.
- The Southwest Championship will now be held during the International Jumping Festival at Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, California, September 16-20, 2020.
- The East Championship will now be held during Saratoga Fall at White Hollow Farm in Stillwater, New York, on September 10-13, pending USEF approval.

The East Coast Classic will now be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday, August 23, in conjunction with the 2020 USEF Junior Hunter National Championships – East Coast.
For 2020 only, the Gladstone Cup Equitation Classic open to any Junior rider that has won either a USEF Hunter Seat Medal, ASPCA Maclay, USEF Show Jumping Talent Search, either phase of a WIHS Equitation Classic at a National or Premier competition, or Overall WIHS Equitation Classic at a competition with a start date between June 1 and May 31 of the qualifying year.

The inaugural East Coast Final will now be held during the New England Equitation Championships in West Springfield, Massachusetts, at Eastern States Exposition on Saturday, October 17.
For the inaugural year, any Junior Active USHJA and USEF Member who has not competed in a National 3’6” Equitation Final will be accepted to compete in the USHJA 3’3” Hunter Seat Medal Finals. Riders are not required to have participated in a 3’3” Hunter Seat Medal class and may choose the East or West Coast Finals.

The West Coast Championships is now open to all competitors that are otherwise eligible for the 2020 competition year. This exception has been made for the 2020 West Coast Championships only.
Don't forget—entries for the East Coast Championships are due June 23! Competitors must complete
both the Kentucky Summer Classic and Pony Hunter Derby Championships entry blanks.

Modifications Made to Green Hunter Eligibility Rules
US Equestrian has modified the Green Hunter eligibility rules to provide owners with an opportunity to preserve the green eligibility of a horse or pony for a future year through either a green reinstatement or green waiver. These modifications are effective through the remainder of the 2020 competition year. To officially submit a request, owners must do so through the
Green Status portal on the USEF website by September 1, 2020.

US Equestrian-Approved Pandemic-Related Rule Modifications for 2020
|
US Equestrian has approved modifications to USEF rules in accordance with a resolution approved by the Board of Directors to address issues related to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The below changes apply directly to hunter/jumper competitors. A full listing of rule modifications related to COVID-19 impacts can be found
here.
Jogging, Conformation and Model – HU118.3, HU121, HU130.d, HU136.7, and HU123.6
- Jogging - The traditional manner of jogging for soundness in hunter classes is waived, and horses will now jog for soundness under saddle by trotting a circle on a loose rein at the end of each over fences performance.
- Pony Hunter and Three Year Old Hunter Model and Conformation Classes - The requirement for model and conformation classes has been waived in the “A”-rated Regular and Green Pony Hunter sections, as well as the Three-Year-Old Hunter section. If model or conformation classes are held, handlers must comply with social distancing guidelines.
- Green and High Performance Conformation Hunter - Handlers in model classes and conformation classes in the Green and High Performance Conformation Hunter sections must comply with social distancing guidelines.

Apply Now! Submit Your Applications for the $25,000 Hamel Family Scholarship for Further Education and the J.T. Tallon Memorial Equitation Grant
|
|
This scholarship is designed to encourage further education among equestrians. Through a generous donation from the Kristen and James Hamel Family Foundation, the USHJA Foundation awards up to $25,000 to be used for college, graduate, trade or professional school to one USHJA member each year.
The USHJA Foundation will award the scholarship mid-summer each year.

The purpose of this grant is to honor the late Tallon's commitment to encouraging excellence in the equitation arena by inspiring junior riders with a passion for equitation to pursue their goals. Through this grant, junior USHJA members with limited financial resources who have qualified for a national equitation final are provided the support they need to attend.
Each year, the USHJA Foundation will grant $1,000 to one junior rider who has qualified for a national equitation championship at a fence height of 3' or higher.

Sport History Spotlight: Course Design
Hunter/Jumper courses provide a snapshot of tradition and innovation. While materials and decorative styles of jumps have changed dramatically over time, the basic jump types have remained fairly consistent. With Hunter divisions originating in foxhunting, horse show jumps basically resemble the post-and-rail fences, stone walls, panels and brush hedges that marked property boundaries.
In the 1940s-1960s, Hunter, Jumper and Equitation courses were more similar and even at indoors tended to include solid walls, coops, gates and panels. Since then, a greater variation of verticals and oxers built of rails with flower boxes or brush fillers inviting a round jump have come to dominate Hunter courses.
