St. Clare Updates for
May 15 - 28, 2021
I would like to share great news with you! We, the priests at the parish of St. Clare of Assisi, are members of a religious community called Salvatorians. You have probably heard of other religious orders such as Dominicans, Oblates, Franciscans, Jesuits, and many more.
On May 15 2021, Salvatorians all over the world (priests, brothers, sisters and lay people who share in the Salvatorian mission and charism) give praise to God and rejoice in celebrating the beatification of their Founder, Fr. Francis Mary of the Cross Jordan.
Fr. Francis Jordan was born on June 16, 1848, in the town of Gurtweil in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, close to the city of Waldshut-Tiengen, near the Swiss border. The following day he was baptized at the local parish church with the name “John Baptist”.
From his youth Fr. Jordan displayed a call to the priesthood that he pursued courageously, despite the many difficulties experienced within a poor family.
Soon after his ordination to the priesthood Fr. Jordan went to the Middle East to learn oriental languages (he was already able to speak several European languages). He visited the Holy Land where his life’s mission became clearer.
While in Lebanon his vocation received even stronger confirmation. There he heard in his heart the words of Scripture: “This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3).
He felt strongly that God was calling him to begin a new Catholic movement of priests, religious, Catholic scholars, and lay people. They would dedicate their lives to their respective vocations: to the proclamation of Jesus Christ as the Saviour of the World; to teach all people everywhere to know and love Him, using all possible ways and means inspired by the Holy Spirit.
As he shared his vision with Church dignitaries and people of faith, his ideas became clearer and more appealing, attracting his first collaborators.
Thus, on December 8, 1881 in Rome, he and his companions made their first vows giving a foundation to a new religious community originally called the “Apostolic Teaching Society”. The beginning was difficult. The idea and the name of the Society went through further discernment and adaptations. Eventually Fr. Jordan’s mission was recognized by the Church and “The Society of the Divine Saviour” received its final and definitive approval of the Holy See.
The main character and charism of this new religious society in the Catholic Church was her universalism primarily shown in the readiness of its members to go and evangelize everywhere and all people by using every possible method at their disposal and as inspired by God’s love.
The very novelty of this apostleship was the inclusion of laypersons, something unknown in those days. Indeed, in the first years of the Society more than 5,000 lay people were actively collaborating with Fr. Jordan.
Father Jordan proved to be a man of great faith and deep character. He died on September 8, 1918 at Tafers, Switzerland, where his body was first laid to rest. It was later transferred to the Society’s Mother House in Rome.
Today more than 2,000 Salvatorians (priests, brothers, sisters, and laypersons) share the vision and mission of their Founder. They are determined in their faith and love for the Divine Saviour to proclaim the words of eternal life and to bring love and hope to the people sent by God’s Providence.
As a community, they celebrate their Founder’s holiness, vision, and gift to the Catholic Church. Please join them, too. Special posters and holy cards will be available in our church for you to pick up. Take advantage of a new blessed to pray for your own intentions.
“Do not rest until you have carried the word of God
to all the corners of the earth.
Be a true herald of the Most High!” (Fr. Francis Mary of the Cross Jordan)

Ethical Concerns Related to Vaccines
Catholics are invited to be vaccinated, both in keeping with the dictates of their conscience and in contributing to the common good by promoting the health and safety of others. All COVID-19 vaccines that are medically approved by the relevant health authorities may be licitly received by Catholics. Since there is currently no choice of vaccine being offered, Catholics in good conscience may receive the vaccine that is available and offered to them. Read more at rcav.org/coronavirus

"God Goes up with Shouts of Joy; the Lord Goes up with Trumpet Blast "
The following words of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, are good for our meditation as we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord:
"The Ascension does not point to Jesus’ absence, but tells us that He is alive in our midst in a new way. He is no longer in a specific place in the world as He was before the Ascension. He is now in the lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each one of us. In our life we are never alone: we have this Advocate who awaits us, who defends us. We are never alone: the Crucified and Risen Lord guides us. We have with us a multitude of brothers and sisters who, in silence and concealment, in their family life and at work, in their problems and hardships, in their joys and hopes, live faith daily and together with us bring the world the lordship of God’s love, in the Risen Jesus Christ, ascended into Heaven, our own Advocate who pleads for us."

Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
On May 3 2018, Pope Francis decreed that “the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church” should be inscribed in the Roman Calendar on the Monday after Pentecost and be celebrated every year in churches throughout the world.
"St Pope Paul VI, at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council, Nov. 21 1964, had declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as “Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother.” Paul VI decreed at the same time that “the Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles."
