KU Commencement event:
At 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 17, KU will stream an event commemorating graduating students. The day's program will include video tributes, musical performances and messages from the chancellor, students, alumni and other Jayhawks. Tune in at 11 a.m. for a pre-event slideshow.

Eddie Muñoz
, J-School academic advisor, for completing his master’s degree in higher education administration this semester. Eddie started taking graduate courses in spring 2017 while continuing to work full-time at the university. He is now a two-time graduate of KU.

Research, Publications and Presentations

Assistant Professor Teri Finneman
received nearly $4,500 in grant funding from KU's general research fund. Finneman will use the money to launch an Oral Histories of Kansas Journalists project similar to those she has coordinated in North Dakota and South Dakota.
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas
was interviewed by
Katy Culver
of the University of Wisconsin as part of "Media Law Chats," a video series about great media law cases featuring First Amendment scholars nationwide. Her case, Texas v. Johnson, was a 1989 case in which the Supreme Court overturned state and federal laws that prohibited the desecration of the U.S. flag.

The students from the J636 Documentary class met online with
New York Times reporter
John Eligon
last week to discuss his recent reporting. The students are working on two projects that intersect in interesting ways with Eligon’s work. One half of the class is creating podcasts that document the experiences of KU students during the school closure this spring. The other half of the class is creating a four-part video documentary about Kansas City Mayor
Quinton Lucas
, including his response to the pandemic. Eligon’s recent work has involved both podcast reporting and reporting on Kansas City’s response to COVID-19. He contributed an account of a Kansas City woman who is seeking a job while living in her car
for the New York Times’s podcast The Daily
. He also
wrote an article
about how different metropolitan area mayors are making decisions about re-opening their cities. For that article, he was given secret access to a conference call among the mayors.

New journalism fellowship
|
The Woodrow Wilson Foundation is administering a new journalism fellowship, which
is open to U.S. journalists who are education beat reporters or those whose work experience includes reporting on education and associated workforce development, social or public policy issues. Potential fellows will be early- and mid-career journalists interested in deepening and expanding their understanding of postsecondary education with a specific emphasis on CTE. Print, radio, TV, multimedia, and online editors and journalists from local and national publications and digital-only news platforms are eligible, as are freelancers who target mainstream/corporate and independent media outlets.
