100 APIA Scholars attended the March 9th Leadership Academy: ELEVATE!

On Saturday, March 9th, APIA Scholars hosted Leadership Academy: ELEVATE at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. An enthusiastic crowd of 100 students from across the nation and the Pacific Islands participated in the day-long event, featuring presenters sharing their experiences, skills, and knowledge with Scholars. Sharing these first-hand accounts helps Scholars hone and refine the skills necessary to succeed in today's economy. Highlights included sessions on Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in the Professions and STEM and Business in the Professions. Fumi Abe and Mic Nguyen of the podcast, Asian, Not Asian discussed cultural expectations and how to lead meaningful non-traditional careers. Another benefit of Leadership Academy: ELEVATE was providing Scholars an opportunity to engage with one another and share and compare the experiences. Many of Scholars left the event with new skills and perspectives on how to succeed not only in higher education but in their future careers.

2019 Jump Start College
Kicks Off at CSU, East Bay!

This past weekend, the 2019 APIA Scholars Jump Start College (JSC) kicked off at California State University, East Bay! Leroy Morishita, President of CSU, East Bay, and Denise Miles, SVP of Corporate Responsibility and Community Relations at Wells Fargo, provided welcome remarks to 196 high school students and their parents. Students explored the journey from high school to college - from choosing a college to admissions and financing an education - while parents learned how to guide their children through the admissions and financing components of higher education. After morning rains, the skies cleared and attendees were able to end their day with a campus tour!
Couldn't join us in California? No problem! Our second JSC will be held later this month at Georgia State University (GSU) on April 27th from 8:15 AM to 3:15 PM. JSC is a FREE college readiness workshop that partners with the nation's Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs) to provide culturally relevant financial aid and college success strategies to APIA high school students and families. These events will include free meals and free prizes.

Huiling Cai is a 2018 APIA / MUFG Union Bank Scholar. She is a first generation college student pursuing her Bachelor's of Science in Public Accounting at Fordham University with the goal to graduate in December 2020.
Huiling immigrated to the United States three years ago. While she was learning English, she was inspired by Barack Obama's words, "make myself of some use," which fueled her drive to earn a degree and be useful to her family, to the community, to society, and to the world. Besides maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Huiling is also involved in programs that help develop her leadership abilities including the President's Society at LaGuardia, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and Academic Peer Instruction.
Huiling was among 100 Scholars selected to attend our APIA Scholars Leadership Academy: ELEVATE this past March. Through the preconference mentorship series, Huiling was mentored by Staci Lee, Contract Development Manager at Farmers Insurance. Huiling gives credit to Ms. Lee's great mentoring that enabled her to prepare for and secure an internship at Ernst & Young. Huiling's long-term career goal is to be a leader in business and become a business consultant or a college professor. She is eager to be an example to other women by speaking on women's issues and helping to build better communities.
