The Latest on Coronavirus for March 16
March 16, 2020
Dear WH&LA Lodging Member:

This afternoon Governor Tony Evers announced a brand new Order  that imposes a statewide moratorium on mass gatherings of 50 or more people to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Wisconsin.

A “Mass Gathering” is defined as" any planned or spontaneous, public or private event or convening that will bring together or is likely to bring together 50 or more people in a single room or single confined or enclosed space at the same time”. This may include, but is not limited to mass gatherings at conference rooms, meeting halls, exhibition centers, tavern, licensed pools, and more.

While the lodging portions of Hotels & motels are technically listed as exempt, along with 22 other specified structures, they must adhere to the specific guidance for restaurants and bars listed below. It is our belief that the portions of lodging properties with meeting spaces are not considered exempt.

Specific guidance is included for Restaurants and bars, which must adhere to the following:

  • Operate at 50% of seating capacity or 50 total people, whichever is less
  • Preserve social distancing of 6 feet between tables, booths, bar stools, and ordering counters
  • Cease self-service operations of salad bars, beverage stations, and buffets
  • Prohibit customers from self-dispensing all unpackaged food and beverages

In addition, all gatherings that bring or likely will bring together 50 or less people in a single confined or enclosed space at the same time must:

  • Operate at 50% of seating capacity
  • Preserve social distancing of 6 feet between people, and
  • Follow all other public health recommendations issued by the Wisconsin Dept. of Public Health

The duration of the Governor’s Order is for the duration of the emergency, which basically means until the Governor’s office provides an update officially ending the emergency.

In addition, the American Hotel & Lodging Association released an update and new data on the national impact of COVID-19 to date :
Dear AHLA Member,

Today, we released new economic talking points and fact sheets on the current and potential economic impact of the Coronavirus on the hotel industry.

Topline data points include:

  • Since the public health issue began escalating in mid-February in the U.S., hotels have already lost $1.5 billion in room revenue.
  • The human toll is equally devastating with major hotel managers already reporting significant layoffs and furloughs with 1 million direct jobs or nearly 3.9 million total jobs that have either been eliminated or will be eliminated in the coming weeks.
  • Individual hotels and major operators are projecting occupancies below 20% for upcoming months. At an occupancy rate of 35% or lower, hotel may simply close their doors, putting 33,000 small business at immediate risk.

We know that these numbers only scratch the surface of the real-life impact our industry is facing, so AHLA has been in active communication with Congress and the Administration to discuss urgent action to provide immediate relief to help the industry.

And finally, as a reminder of what was sent out just a few hours ago, the WH&LA is asking all lodging members to participate in our 3-Minute Survey on the Coronavirus impact on lodging in Wisconsin. A strong reason to participate is that we will compile the results and share them with you on Wednesday, provided enough members participate by end of Tuesday, March 17 (tomorrow).

Please be careful and stay healthy!

Best,

Trisha
