MARCH 2020 | NEWS & UPDATES

President's Message
Marching Into Spring!
The AARV Board of Directors is working on some exciting new projects for our members. One of these goals is to develop a speaker registry that will provide a pool of credentialed speakers interested in addressing professional and student organizations with some educating presentations focused on their areas of expertise. Be on the lookout for a survey that will help us to build this registry and consider whether you would like to be a part of it! Additionally, we're working to collaborate with national and international veterinary rehab or organizations with a similar scope to expand the opportunities and expertise available to our members.
We were disappointed to receive the news that the
2020 SAVMA symposium would be canceled as we were looking forward to interacting with students there. However, we are striving to continue to support our AARV students and will be sending out some information about vet rehab webinar opportunities to our student members!
The AARV is excited to announce that
Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) is once again offering its online course,
Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research. This year the course series begins on May 25, 2020, and includes invaluable instructions in study design, publication preparation and writing grant proposals! CRI will also be sponsoring another grant this year, with details to come soon. We'll be continuing to provide several other grant opportunities to AARV members throughout this year. Over the next several months we'll be putting out a call for our 2020 grant applications, so stay tuned for these in future newsletters.
On behalf of the AARV Board of Directors, we thank you so much for your membership and are committed to continuing to serve you well.
Respectfully,
Andrea Henderson, DVM, CCRT, CCRP, CMFT, DACVSMR

Rose Rock Veterinary Hospital and Pet Resort
The rehab department at Rose Rock started in May 2015. We focus on canine and feline physical rehabilitation. The majority of our patients are post-operative patients from orthopedic surgery or arthritic patients. We do see a number of sports medicine patients, primarily agility and flyball competitors.
Our program includes underwater treadmill, cold laser therapy, gym equipment exercising, acupuncture, Shockwave Therapy, Protein Rich Plasma therapy, and STEM cell therapy. We also have the ability to fiberglass cast for custom orthotics and prosthetics for patients who would benefit from them.

New Rehab Ideas Technician Tip Winner!
Congratulations to our winner Maria Maddox, LVT, CCRP, AMCP, VTS (Physical Rehabilitation), Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians - Organizing Member, Membership Chair. She won the February contest of "New Year, New Rehab Ideas." The idea is to find an "old" rehab prop and use it in a new way.
We received a number of good ideas, including Maria's winning tip to use SoftClaws product - originally designed to be glued over dog nails to protect furniture/flooring from dogs that scratch - with her neuro patients. When she has a neuro patient that is mobile but has limited proprioception and is dragging its feet, the nails can get worn down to the quicks and bleed. Trimming down an appropriately sized SoftClaw and applying it to these worn-down nails allows the vinyl to be scraped and gives the nail some time to grow and heal. Depending on the success of application and the degree of dragging, they can stay in place for several days up to several weeks before needing to be replaced. Her clinic usually carries several sizes and applies them free of charge to patients. This way she can accurately assess which size fits best and if they help the patient; then the client can purchase their own box online.
Congratulations, Maria, on winning our special prize bundle!

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Focus on State Practice Acts: Kentucky
by Theresa Pancotto, DVM, MS, MS, DACVIM(N), CCRP
Legislative Liaison
I'm going through each state at random and providing an interpretation of the acts to better guide individuals in managing physical rehabilitation as it pertains to their practice and state.
Interpretation
"Physical therapist" and like terminology is protected by the Kentucky Physical Therapy Practice act. In the Veterinary Practice Act, the diagnosis of physical conditions, use of apparati/manual techniques, acupuncture, laser therapy and manipulation are considered in the definition of practicing veterinary medicine.
Veterinarians practicing physical therapy should use the terms physical rehabilitation.
There are no explicit guidelines for human PTs who've trained in animal work but based on the definition of "practicing veterinary medicine" it would appear that these individuals could be considered in violation of the law if they work on animals.
Veterinary Practice Act
"Practice of veterinary medicine" means: a) To diagnose, treat, correct, change, relieve, or prevent: animal disease, deformity, defect, injury, or other
physical or mental conditions, including the prescription or administration of any drug, medicine, biologic,
apparatus, application, anesthetic, or other therapeutic or diagnostic substance or
technique, and the use of any manual or mechanical procedure for testing for pregnancy, or for correcting sterility or infertility, or to render advice or recommendation with regard to any of the above; b) To engage in veterinary surgery, obstetrics, embryo transfer, dentistry,
acupuncture,
laser therapy,
manipulation, and all other branches or specialties of veterinary medicine and the prescribing, administering, or dispensing of drugs and medications for veterinary purposes, in accordance with the applicable federal statutes and regulations governing controlled prescription and legend drugs;
Physical Therapy Practice Act
"Physical therapy" means the use of selected knowledge and skills in planning, organizing, and directing programs for the care of individuals whose ability to function is impaired or threatened by disease or injury, encompassing preventive measures, screening, tests in aid of diagnosis by a licensed doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, chiropractic, or podiatry and evaluation and invasive or noninvasive procedures with emphasis on the skeletal system, neuromuscular and cardiopulmonary function, as it relates to physical therapy. Physical therapy includes screening or evaluations performed to determine the degree of impairment of relevant aspects, such as but not limited to nerve and muscle function including subcutaneous bioelectrical potentials, motor development, functional capacity, and respiratory or circulatory efficiency. Physical therapy also includes physical therapy treatment performed upon referral by a licensed doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, chiropractic, or podiatry, including but not limited to exercises for increasing or restoring strength, endurance, coordination and range of motion, stimuli to facilitate motor activity and learning, instruction in activities of daily living, and the use of assistive devices and the application of physical agents to relieve pain or alter physiological status. The use of roentgen rays and radium for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, the use of electricity for surgical purposes, including cauterization and colonic irrigations are not authorized under the term "physical therapy" as used in this chapter; (2) "Physical therapist" means a professional person who has met the educational requirements of this chapter and who is licensed to practice physical therapy pursuant to this chapter.
Have questions or know of updates to practice acts? Please contact me at [email protected].

TECHNICIAN CORNER
Skills for the Veterinary Technician and VTS Candidate
by Sandy Gregory, M. Ed, RVT, VTS (Physical Rehabilitation), CCRA AARV Technician Liaison
Being a veterinary technician has us wearing many hats. There is such a wealth of knowledge we possess. Some skills we forget because we don't use them all the time, and others we are proficient at because they are every day for us.
If you are considering getting your VTS, there is a skill list that each person must have an advanced knowledge of. This is defined as "being able to consistently demonstrate a higher level of skill above and beyond the credentialed veterinary technician in order to accomplish mastery of physical rehabilitation therapies, therapeutic exercise equipment and provide education to clients, colleagues and others." Most of us are pretty skilled at many of these therapies already. Here are the core categories from the APRVT application packet.
- Canine Behavior and Handling
- Small Animal Anatomy, Physiology and Directional Terms
- Response of Musculoskeletal Tissues to Disuse and Remobilization
- Patient Assessment and Management
- Physical Modalities, Manual Techniques and Adjunctive Treatments
- Common Conditions and Surgical Procedures in Veterinary Physical Rehabilitation
- Client Communication
- Nutrition
If you are not currently planning on getting your VTS, take a look at it as a way to refresh your own skills. Jog that memory of muscles, surgical procedures, supplements or even inflammation. You might be able to understand some of the modalities in better detail. The list is pretty comprehensive for common rehabilitative therapies and conditions for patients treated in veterinary rehabilitation. Who knows, you might be inspired to take the exam.
Best of luck in your career!
