Finally, Spring has sprung! It’s that time of year to clean up the yard and do some trimming, pruning, raking, mulching, fertilizing and maybe even a coat of paint on that garage trim. When it’s over, the appearance and the sense of pride is all worth it. Our Public Works Department is already out picking up trash on village streets. My friends Lou and Debbie carry a garbage bag on their daily walk so they can pick up trash. I encourage all to do the same and keep Round Lake looking great.

Did you know that Cedar Lake Road is a County owned road? The Village is taking an initiative to do our part to clean up all roadways within the Village. Adopt-A-Highway is another means for keeping our roads trash free. Your group or business can work with Lake County Division of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway Program Coordinator to select an available section of county highway to adopt.

The Village recently adopted Cedar Lake Road from Townline Road north to Route 120 and the Village Engineer, adopted Cedar Lake Road from Route 120 to Nippersink Road.  Learn more at Adopt-A-Highway

Round Lake Fiscal Year 2020 Draft Budget
At the April 1, 2019 COTW meeting an overview of the draft 2020 operating budget was presented to the Village Board. The preparation of the budget involves the development of expenditure estimates for departments in light of available revenues. The budget specifies resources for providing public programs and services and establishes a cost of those programs. The total proposed budget for fiscal year 2020 is $22.5 million which includes inter-fund transfers.

The budget message presented to the Village Board may be viewed at: 2020 Budget Draft & Assumptions
Round Lake's Proposed Capital Plan
All Village services, from the water coming from our faucets to Police Officers patrolling our streets, require buildings and other infrastructure to support them. Capital planning includes maintaining existing infrastructure as well as making investments for new infrastructure.

The Village’s capital plan, in its 13th year, identifies capital projects and equipment purchases, provides a planning schedule and identifies options for funding items in the plan.

The focus of the plan is on preserving the Village’s infrastructure while ensuring the efficient use of public funds. The capital plan review process allows for a systematic evaluation of all potential projects at the same time and can be adjusted as conditions change, such as when policies or priorities are modified or when new funding opportunities arise.

Visit Capital Improvement Plan - 2020 through 2025 to view the full document that will be presented to Village Board for approval on April 15th.
2019 Lake County Road Projects
Spring has officially started and that means it's time to start road construction. Lake County will have nearly $134 million in road projects under construction in 2019.

Two Lake County resurfacing projects in the Village may impact residents. Resurfacing on Wilson Road from Route 60 to north of 120 and resurfacing on Fairfield Road from Nippersink to Route 134.

Resurfacing a roadway typically takes about three months to complete and usually requires temporary lane closures and flaggers to direct traffic. Whenever possible, four foot wide bike-friendly paved shoulders are added during resurfacing projects.

Residents can use the interactive construction map below to see the latest information on projects or view the list of current and upcoming construction projects on the Lake County DOT website .
Construction Update:
Wilson Rd & Nippersink Rd Intersection
3/18/19 - The contractor has begun installing the last round of storm sewer and will stay onsite until it is completed. Crews have completed pavement removal and are scheduled to begin final grading on east Nippersink Road. The contractor will also begin prepping for paving of the bike path in that same location.

Coming weeks:  The contractor will continue to install the remaining storm sewer and complete the east section of Nippersink Road. Once the storm sewer is complete crews will begin to reconstruct and widen the west side of Wilson Road.

Traffic impacts: Watch for workers and flaggers. Watch for trucks coming in and out of the closed lanes. Expect delays.

How Water Gets to Your Home
The Village purchases water from the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA). Water is delivered by underground pipe to a receiving station in the Village. From there, water enters the Village owned and maintained water distribution system. This system includes two water towers, two ground water reservoir tanks, over 72 miles of water main pipe, over 800 valves and over 1,000 fire hydrants. Each home is connected to this distribution system by a service pipe, a buffalo box (valve) and then a water meter.
How do water meters work?
The water meter counts how much water flows through it and into your home. This meter is connected to a radio read box mounted to the outside of your home which sends the reading to a drive-by unit mounted to a truck. Once a month, a Public Works staff member drives through the Village and a radio connected to a laptop reads the meters.
How do water towers work?
The bulb at the top of the water tower is the only portion of the tower that holds water. The stem of the tower is dry and has a pipe to fill the bulb and a ladder that goes through the center of the bulb to an access hatch at the roof. The water that is up in the air provides pressure in the water system. The weight of the water in the water towers pushes water out of your faucet when you turn it on. The ground reservoirs store water so there is always enough on hand to pump into the system and fill the towers. The water levels in the towers and reservoirs are constantly monitored to ensure proper pressures.
Lakes Region Sanitary District Consolidating Services
The Lakes Region Sanitary District and the Lake County Board recently announced that they are very close to entering into an Intergovernmental Agreement that will consolidate sanitary sewer services.

Lakes Region Sanitary District collects and transmits wastewater for more than 5,500 customers, including residents in the Silver Leaf Glen and Emerald Bay subdivisions.

According to district officials, the consolidation is estimated to save taxpayers serviced by the district approximately $1.25 million annually. Find out more

Code Enforcement FAQ's
Q) When do my holiday lights need to be removed?
A)  All holiday lights and decorations should be removed by March 31st. The National Electric Code allows temporary lighting to be displayed for a maximum of 90 days.

Q) We need to replace several damaged fence posts on our existing fence; do we need a building permit?
A) No, the village does not require a building permit for the replacement of three fence posts or less (for an existing fence) as it is considered maintenance.

Q) We are thinking of making improvements to our yard this summer, like installing a patio, fireplace pit, and maybe a pool. Do I need permits?
A) Yes, most home improvement projects for inside and outside of your house need a permit. Please visit Community Development to see what requires building permits. There are handouts to explain what is needed to apply for the permit and the application form. Please call 847-546-0963 with any questions.
