Last week we buried my dad.
He was the best dad too; kind, smart supportive, stubborn, quiet, honest, strong, creative, generous, mischievous, funny, devout and always there for us.

He was a giant of a man, strong as an ox, who adored his family, loved tiny dogs, hard work, coffee, corn muffins, cigarettes and saying the rosary.
He carved wood and stone and we painted outdoors together.
He embodied what it is to be truly comfortable in one's own skin.

He grew up hunting ducks and trapping muskrats from his homemade boats, poling his way through the meadowlands - a veritable Jersey Huck Finn.
He taught me to trap as a boy, but what I cherish most were the silent moments shared out on the ice.
Without words he showed me what it is to fully sense one's surroundings with a full heart and gratitude for the simple beauty of it all -
And the power of small moments.

While standing alone on the snowy bank of the Delaware River before his service I was intensely aware of how he would have loved the scene: The violet mountains, the smell of the fresh water, the sounds of ice moving down the river, and the almost imperceptible warmth of the pale January sun.

I can see him now in a hand-knitted hat from my mom, old fatigue jacket, cigarette on his lip, quietly taking it all in.
So I wasn't really alone.

Thank you for helping me to see it all Dad-
And for the love and all the grand, small moments.
Give Mom a hug.

You will always be with me.

Workshops

Madeline Island School of the Arts

Tucson campus on Tanque Verde Ranch

5-Day Plein Air Workshop, Tucson AZ

February 10th - 14th, 2020 (Monday - Friday)
"Tanque Verde Ranch at the MISA-West Campus is an ideal winter destination workshop for plein-air painters. Get out of the cold and join me at this peaceful and phenomenal desert setting."

This Plein-Air workshop is for more advanced students and they will receive plenty of individual attention. Your week at the Ranch will be filled with some of the best plein air painting locations in the Southwest. The Ranch is nestled in the Rincon Mountains with unparalleled opportunities to capture historic Western architecture and iconic Southwestern landscapes.

The objective of this workshop is to improve the clarity of your intention before the painting begins and ultimately achieve a more artistic statement.
If you wish to take your work to the next level, this workshop is for you.

6-Day Studio Workshop: The Big Idea Creating a Large Painting in the Studio

March 21st - 26th, 2020 (Saturday - Thursday)
This will be my fifth time teaching this highly-effective class. You will have the opportunity to implement a workable strategy for approaching a large work successfully indoors. Daily lectures will take you from concept to finish while making informed, personal choices.

Madeline Island School of Art
5-Day Plein Air Workshop, Wisconsin

July 6th - 10th, 2020 (Monday - Friday)
This will be my seventh year teaching at Madeline Island School of the Arts.

This is a great destination workshop. There is plenty of variety to paint and the staff does an incredible job keeping you comfortable at the School. The facility is top notch.

This workshop will introduce you to the Prismatic Palette and its use in helping you capture the myriad light effects you are faced with when painting en plein air.  Correct use of the Prismatic Palette will help you judge values, using warm and cool tones to bring things forward and to push things back, and to depict light and shade, and to describe the type and time of day.
