FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
So, this is my very last NYCU communication as principal of Lewis and Clark High School.

I was hired as a teacher here fresh out of college and went to work overseeing the production of the yearbook (back in the day when we had a darkroom and processed our own photos which were then cropped and glued onto mock pages before being shipped off to the publisher with a fervent prayer that nothing would come detached in shipping), I taught just about every English class we offered over the years, my own three children graduated from here, and in recent years I’ve served as an instructional coach, a principal assistant, and principal here.

I am leaving to support the curricular work of district experts in both elementary and secondary instruction and am eager to do all that I can to make sure that learners in SPS receive the academic and social-emotional bolstering that they need to move well and healthfully into their best versions of self.

But leaving is weird. And hard. And then weird some more.

The finest people on the planet work here and the most endearing and earnest students on the planet learn here.

It’s true.

This is not merely an institution of learning, a school.

LC is family.

I am so beyond proud of the way that this family has withstood the challenges presented by the past several years.

This family has weathered loss, pressure, evolving social and political divisions, technological advancements that sometimes don’t advance much other than anxiety and depression among our kids, increases in incidences of violence among our youth, and, of course, Covid.

In every challenge tossed their way the members of this family have drawn together, supported one another, made certain sure that every safety net available to students was tight and strong, and, very deeply, loved your kids.

No other work in the world is like that of a high school educator.
It’s been a joy to serve this staff and a humbling honor to serve your families.

Huge welcome to new Principal Ivan Corley – you will cherish this family more every day.

Best wishes to all – I am excited to watch all of the next steps you will take together!

LC Principal

Summer Camps:
  1. REGISTRATION: for summer athletic camps is coordinated by the Business Office. Registration may be done in person, by mail to the high school Business Office or online at www.spokaneschools.org. To access the online payment link, select the Quick Access tab, then Parents, then Online Payments box. Online payments are also available at each school’s web site. Use your student’s account to register and pay online (User Name = Student ID; Password = students last name, first letter capitalized). Click on “Guest User” to register and pay with a User Name and Password. Spokane Public School’s students with a documented low-income status will not be refused for inability to pay. Contact the Business Office, if you need financial assistance. Early registration is suggested to avoid possible camp cancellation.
  2. REFUNDS: Once you complete your registration and payment, refunds will not be permitted. However, camps not meeting a minimum enrollment may be cancelled with all the participants given an opportunity to participate in another camp or a full refund.
  3. INSURANCE INFORMATION: All camp participants are required to have insurance coverage. School insurance (24 hour coverage) purchased for the school year 2020-2021 will remain in effect for summer athletic camps. Information is available at the high school Business Office.
  4. DOWNLOAD: the registration flyer.
Honors/AP Summer English/Math Assignments: A few of our English and Math classes require summer assignments. If you are registered for the following classes, here is your assignment (if your class is not listed, it does NOT have a required summer assignment):
Theatre Summer Camp: Spokane Valley Theatre Summer theatre camps for students in grades 7-12 are open! Spend a bit of your time on stage this summer with our camps for middle and high school students:

BACKSTORY CAMP | July 19-22:
  • Without singing a note, this week long camp will focus on the parts in-between musical numbers; the dialogue. Students will create their character’s backstory to elevate their skills as a musical theatre actor. Students will work with scene partners to perform scenes from popular musicals such as The Lion King, Legally Blonde, Into the Woods, The Prom, Hello, Dolly! and The Wizard of Oz.

DECODING THE SCRIPT CAMP | July 26-29:
  • In this exciting camp, students will be cast into one of six 10 minute plays to be performed at the end of the week! Each script tactfully explores the theme of bullying. Students gain an understanding of how their unique experiences can be used onstage to connect to their character’s circumstances, even if they haven’t had the same experience. Specific skills learned include pacing in a scene, detail to language and word choice, confidence in cold reading (seeing a scene for the first time), and detecting a character’s motive through their intentions. This is a camp NOT to miss!

Both camps are perfect for all experience levels and are instructed by highly energized drama teacher Haliey Weber. Only a handful of spots remain for each camp, so we encourage you to register for your spot quickly! Just visit www.svsummertheatre.com, click the “Camp” tab and then “Register for Camp.” Questions? Email SVST Production Coordinator Collin Pittmann: collin@svsummertheatre.com We truly hope to see YOU at camp this summer!
Need a Job?: If you are looking for a part time spring or summer job, stop and check out the job openings outside of room 111.
Volunteer Opportunity: Back by popular demand, the LC Environmental Club will be running their Green Bluff Harvest program again this year (for details see https://sites.google.com/site/yes350org/project-database/from-u-pick-to-grab-go). If you are an LC student willing to volunteer a few hours per week to pick seasonal fruit for a local food bank, or a parent interested in ordering fruit and vegetables from our Green Bluff farmers, please email Ali Groza at  yes350info@gmail.com or call her at (509) 405-1885 and she will add you to our email list.  Please include your name, phone number and details about how you would like to participate. We will send out information every week with available fruit varieties and cost - you can order as much or as little as you want, there is no fixed commitment. Orders will be distributed at the Hart Field LC concession stand. Last year we picked cherries, peaches, apricots, Italian plums, pears, apples, pumpkins, fresh garlic, beets and carrots - there's always something new! Our program will begin in July once the cherries are ripe, and run through the end of October. Service hours certificates will be given out every week to participating volunteers.
Thank you for supporting our local farmers and food banks!

COLLEGE & CAREER
FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now OPEN! It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov. In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. Learn more about FAFSA by reading 101: FAFSA. Do you need help with filing out your FAFSA? We have a great video resource for you from the Washington Student Achievement Council - FAFSA Line by Line - this video will point out common mistakes, tell you the information you will need to complete the FAFSA, and walk you through every single line in the application. You can also reach out to Mr. Norton for help on FAFSA, college apps, and scholarships!
