Explore the opportunities!
 Boyne City Main Street and the Boyne Area Chamber are better together, and we want you to join the greatest combo of community volunteers. Join us Wednesday, February 5th from 4-7 p.m. at the Boyne City Taproom/Pine Lake Lodge for a sweet and simple night of building a better sandwich. Volunteers will be on hand to welcome current, new or interested community members to our organizations. Of course, there will be PB & J sandwiches as well.
What volunteer opportunities are available? Boyne City Main Street will have representatives from Boyne Thunder, the Boyne City Farmers Market, Stroll the Streets, Harvest Festival, Santa Parade & Holiday Open House, Walkabout Sculpture Show, and more on hand.
Boyne Area Chamber volunteers will be on hand to share information on the July 4th Duck Race, Craft Beer Block Party, Annual Golf Outing, Annual Awards Gala, Evenings at the Gazebo, Off the Clock, Grub Club, and more.

Celebrate all that is chocolate at Chocolate Covered Boyne
 There are many reasons to spend the day in Boyne City, but nothing as sweet as chocolate indulgences throughout downtown. Chocolate Covered Boyne is your chance to experience chocolate treats and good deals at participating businesses on February 14 & 15 during regular store hours, in celebration of Valentine's Day. This event is a great way to chase away the winter blues and indulge in delectable creations, all conveniently located in downtown Boyne City.
The event culminates in a CHOCOLATE DESSERT CONTEST
from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, at the Boyne City High School Hospitality Program classroom in the downtown Education Center building across the street from the library. Enter through the door on Main Street. This "tasty" competition, hosted by last year's winner, the Hospitality Class, is open to the public. Be a part of the action as our guest judges sample desserts prepared by local restaurants.
Dessert tasting will be free and the Hospitality students will have lunches available for purchase. There will be both a judges award and people's choice award, and the winners take home a trophy and chocolate bragging rights.

How to use and process Chamber Checks
 As a Chamber member, the benefit of using Chamber Checks is open to you, and we hope you will participate in this effort to keep money local. Each year the Chamber sells thousands of dollars worth of Chamber Checks, ensuring that money is spent in our local economy. Chamber Checks are issued through Charlevoix State Bank by the Boyne Chamber and are redeemable just like a personal check.
EASY FOR BUSINESSES TO ACCEPT - Chamber Checks are easy to use since they are an official bank check.
So when a merchant receives a payment with a Chamber Check, they can deposit it for the full face value in their bank account as they would any other check deposit.
There is no need to return them to the chamber office for reimbursement like the old Boyne Bucks program. Since Chamber Checks are prepaid, just like a gift card, there is no need to worry if the check will clear.
WHAT ABOUT CHANGE? - It is up to each business to determine if change or store credit is given for Chamber Checks that exceed the purchase amount.
BOYNE BUCKS ARE STILL GOOD and will be redeemable with us for the through December, 2021. Member businesses should continue to turn in Boyne Bucks as you get them, and you will be reimbursed.

Veterans Park Pavilion expansion project is progressing nicely
An update from City Manager Michael Cain:
The Boyne City Pavilion is getting a case of shingles... but that's a good thing. According to the city's contractor, Bob Kroondyk, Boyne City's Pavilion project continues to progress nicely with lots of activity taking place in Veterans Park. Shingles are going on the roof of the new east side covered picnic areas. The face brick system and bricks are being installed behind plastic tenting along with trim boards, and ceiling cedar boards are also being installed. Shake shingles are getting painted in the pavilion in advance of their installation. Carpenters are building the picnic area's roof cupolas offsite and delivering them to a subcontractor for matching the nearby lighthouse roof design. The copper roofing material for the cupolas is arriving soon and will be delivered to the subcontractor for fabrication. The plumbing inspection for the commercial kitchen's grease trap was scheduled for Wednesday and after that, they will reinstall concrete for epoxy floors. Work on fire suppression sprinkler systems is about 50% complete. The new range hood system is scheduled to be installed right after the floors, and the counters and steel wall panels were ordered last week. The project, funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and local contributions, is scheduled to be completed by the May 14th start of the Boyne City National Mushroom Festival. When completed, the expanded and improved Boyne City Pavilion will be available for year-round use by the public.

Vineyard to host Chamber business networking on Feb. 20th
 Boyne Valley Vineyards will host the Boyne Area Chamber's "Off The Clock" business networking social from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 20th. The vineyard is located just south of Petoskey at 5325 US 131 North, Boyne Falls. Off The Clock is the new name for Business After Hours, the chamber's monthly business networking event held at member businesses. Chamber members and the public are invited to attend. There is no charge for admission or refreshments, and wine tasting will be featured.
At the Chamber's recent Awards Gala, Boyne Valley Vineyards was recently given the Rising Star Award, recognizing a new business that "has brought something new, stimulating and valuable to the community." The business is a family-owned and operated winery focused on the production of local cold hardy wines. Since 2016, owners Tom and Christi Mahaney have planted nearly 3,000 grape vines at their 14-acre Boyne City-area site as well as at the 25-acre property along U.S. 131 where the tasting room opened a few months ago. Tasting Room hours are 12-6 p.m. daily, closed on Tuesday.

Former Petoskey Chamber exec starts new post for Consumers

Carlin Smith is the new community affairs manager for Consumers Energy serving Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Kalkaska, Otsego and Presque Isle Counties. Smith replaces Tim Petrosky, who is retiring after 38-years with the company. During Tim's tenure, he led public affairs work for Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant and the Little Traverse Bay Environmental Project in Bay Harbor. Smith started work with Consumers on January 6th after working nearly 25 years in the chamber of commerce industry serving both the Harbor Springs and Petoskey Regional Chambers of Commerce. He will be headquartered at the Consumers Energy Service Center in Boyne City and can be reached at [email protected]. Consumers Energy is the state's largest energy provider, proudly serving 6.7 million Michigan residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula Counties.

Grant provides Little Free Libraries to McLaren Northern Michigan

Thanks to funding from the Burns Foundation, Inc., five new Little Free Libraries were installed in the busiest areas of McLaren Northern Michigan. The libraries, which hold 20-30 books each, allow patients and visitors to have free access to books that they can read (and keep if they choose) during their wait or stay at the hospital's Petoskey campus.
The libraries can be found in four major waiting rooms and in the cafeteria. Shelves are stocked through book donations from local residents. Hospital colleagues and medical staff are also active participants in the "take a book" and "share a book" philosophy.
"Having the Little Free Libraries is a wonderful addition to our waiting rooms," said Andrew Bielaczyc, MD. "The family members are especially grateful to have access to reading material while they wait. It is such a meaningful project. Anything we can do to make patients and their family members more comfortable is important to us."

BC Blaze robotics team is ready to recharge for a new season

A new year brings robotics to area high schools once again. FIRST Robotics Competition has partnered with LucasFilms as a part of its Star Wars for Change initiative. Infinite Recharge includes many tasks for robots to complete. Power Cells (balls) must reach high and low goals for robots to manipulate a control panel to activate a shield. Robots must return to park or climb to end the game. Boyne City has one of the most established teams in Northern Michigan and is recharging into the 2020 season. The season began with B.C. Blaze welcoming 34 teams from the Northern Michigan area, offering collaboration workshops, robot kit pick-up and camaraderie at the FRC Kick Off on January 4.
B.C. Blaze has grown from 6 to 32 high school students. Adult mentors, including seven alumni, help the team in a variety of tasks. "I'm involved to support the students and the community,'' says adult mentor Carol Valentine. "B.C. Blaze has given my daughter many opportunities to be involved. I'm proud to support the program with my time and skills." While robotics season runs year-round, build season begins in January and culminates with world competition in April. B.C. Blaze spreads STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) throughout the entire district and community. Additional information about B.C. Boyne Eta Nu Charities would like to thank the community members who made a donation to the Lights of Love benefit for the Northwest Michigan Hospice Assist program this past December 4th. Forty personalized Hearts adorned the tree and 116 tree lights memorialized loved ones. Eta Nu presented a $3,970 check to Jeanne Marriott, executive director of Northwest Michigan Hospice Assist. NMHA is a non-medical hospice service specializing in volunteer and grief support for those facing illness and loss in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego. In the past 32 years, Eta Nu Charities has contributed over $111,000 to hospice and Hospice Assist programs.
Eta Nu would like to thank those who purchased tree lights and personalized hearts plus the sponsors who contributed to the event. Hospice Assist offers twice-monthly grief support groups in BC
 Hospice Assist is honored to offer monthly Grief Support Groups in Boyne City at the City Hall Community Room. These sessions are open to the public, and there is no fee to attend. Facilitated by Hospice Assist staff, the group meets twice each month, on the first Thursday at 11 a.m. and third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Hospice Assist is a non-medical, nonprofit agency with a mission to provide "Compassionate Support Through Illness and Grief." Monthly Grief Support groups are also held in Charlevoix and Petoskey, additional locations and times are listed on our

Information on the Charlevoix Conservation District Spring Tree Sale fundraiser has just been released. Details and order forms can be found on the Tree Sale page of the district website

There is no deadline for orders, however the pick-up weekend for orders is always the last weekend in April - Friday, April 24th from 2-5pm and Saturday, April 25th from 9am-noon. Any additional or discounted trees will be available after 9am on Saturday.

Winter rafting on the Jordan River is a 'magical experience'
 From MLive.com: The words "winter" and "river rafting" don't often go together - which is precisely what makes this unusual wintertime adventure, offered by a few Michigan canoe liveries, so special. "It's a magical experience," says Melanie Bennett, co-owner of Jordan Valley Outfitters, which was the first livery in the state to offer these trips. "I feel transported to another world." On a typical trip, guests sit in a large, six-person raft, which is steered down the river by a guide. Picture it like floating through a snow globe: As the raft moves along, you'll see enchanting ice formations, snow-capped tree canopies, and possibly some great wildlife, such as bald eagles, river otters and deer. Fast rivers are best for winter rafting because they are less likely to freeze over, but don't expect a white-water experience; the trips are peaceful, and you won't get wet. (Guides do recommend bundling up in water-resistant clothing, like snow pants -- not only for warmth but for occasional drips from your paddle, or if there's snow falling while you're out there).

The Rambler Sports Network will broadcast the Boyne City High School boys and girls basketball games as they host Kalkaska this Friday, January 31st. The broadcast begins at 5:15 p.m. with the girls game, followed by the boys game. You won't want to miss all the exciting action this Friday. Join the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Music's Community Orchestras as they present their annual Winter Concert in the CTAC Theater on Sunday, February 9 at 2:30 p.m.
The CTAC Concert Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra will perform selections highlighting the diversity of string orchestra repertoire. From medieval French love songs to Bach concertos to Japanese-influenced modern compositions, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. The concert will also feature performances from CTAC's Little Stars and Intermediate Strings classes. The concert is free and open to the public.

Walloon Winterfest features indoor & outdoor fun on Feb. 22
 The Village of Walloon Lake is hosting the 3rd Annual Walloon Winterfest on Saturday, February 22nd, from 1-4 p.m. The event will take place at Barrel Back Restaurant, The Village Green Park, and Tommy's Walloon.
Winterfest is a family-friendly event, with indoor and outdoor activities for kids of all ages. There will be complimentary ice skate rentals in a variety of sizes, and free skating at the ice rink in the Village Green Park. Snowshoe and cross-country skis are available for rental at Tommy's to explore local hiking trails, weather permitting. Warm up inside with a complimentary Hot Chocolate Bar.
The Petoskey Snowmobile Club will be holding their 2nd Annual Vintage Snowmobile Ride beginning at their clubhouse, 4172 Evergreen Trail, Petoskey. It will end at Barrel Back Restaurant with the snowmobiles showcased on the lake. Gas is available at the Blue Facilities Building and snowmobile parking is available for the event. Enjoy free bean soup at the bean pot while enjoying the vintage snowmobiles.

Vendor applications for the summer version of the Boyne City Farmers Market are now available here. The summer market is held in Veterans Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 16 through October 17.
The indoor Winter Market
continues from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday in the lobby of Boyne City Hall. This year-round Farmers Market is packed full of beautiful produce, greens, homemade goodies and much more.

Senior Centers celebrate Valentine's Day and Fat Tuesday
 Come Celebrate Valentine's Day with the Charlevoix County senior centers, including the Boyne Area Senior Center, on February 14th. We have a special meal and activities planned.
A new celebration this year is our Mardi Gras & Fat Tuesday Meal and Day. Join us February 25th for some fun. On Ash Wednesday, February 26th, we will have a meal for everyone's Lent needs. Every Friday we have a fish alternative, too.
DINING HOURS - We are excited to share new dining hours for all of our Senior Centers to better accommodate all the busy schedules and to provide a true lunch hour experience. All lunchtime meals will be available from 11:30 a.m until 12:30 p.m. If you are already coming to the centers for your meals, you can still eat when you want with those you normally eat with. The Pledge of Allegiance and grace will still be said at Noon. The extended hours are meant to encourage those not currently coming for lunch due to scheduling conflicts. These hours also give our regulars a bit of flexibility and free up some seating.
CAREGIVER SUPPORT - We have updated times for our Caregiver Support Groups available at our County Senior Centers. All caregivers are welcome, as we know our professional caregivers need support too. The Boyne session is held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month in the conference room.
STROKE PROGRAM - The Senior Centers are having special educational programs, including a Stroke presentation from Munson Healthcare at 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 19th. Programs on Heart Health and a Medicare Workshop will be announced soon.

EXPERT ADVICE about the origins and meaning of dreams will be featured at Lifetree Café on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
The program, titled "The Miracle of Dreams: Does God Speak to Us Through Our Dreams?" features a filmed interview with Dr. Terry Himes of the Colorado Sleep Center. He explains what researchers have discovered about dreams, the possible sources of those dreams, and the role sleep and dreaming play in maintaining a healthy life.
"We know that fragments of our previous day's experience or possibly the past week, can be processed through dreams," says Himes. "It must be that the association areas in our brain are actually responsible for elaborating the content of a story. It is the association areas that help us process and consolidate memories."
