HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND AT UUCUC
SUNDAY SERVICE
EVERYTHING IS HOLY NOW
APRIL 7, 2019 / 10:15 A.M.
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW WITH LAURA ROBINSON

Our spiritual theme for April is "What does it mean to be a people of wholeness?" UU songwriter Peter Mayer wrote an autobiographical song about his deepening understanding of the holiness/wholeness of the world, Everything Is Holy Now. Our own Laura Robinson will be singing as we celebrate the miracle of the returning spring in this joyous Sunday service.
PARTNER CHURCH BRUNCH!

The Partner Church Committee invites you to stay after service on April 7 and enjoy an Indian brunch! The breakfast will take place in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, April 7 from 11:45 a.m. through 2:00 p.m.
FINAL OPPORTUNITY TO SIGN UP THIS SUNDAY TO HAVE YOUR PHOTO TAKEN FOR THE NEW CHURCH DIRECTORY!

The final opportunity to sign-up will be available until 2:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall after church service for photography session reservations. For further details about online reservations and the detailed schedule, please see the information below under "Announcements."
WHAT WOULD AN ANNUAL MEETING BE LIKE WITHOUT A FEW CHANGES TO OUR BYLAWS?
From Brian McDermott

On May 5, our Congregation will be having our Annual Meeting.  As our Congregation has grown closer to being a mid-sized (program-sized) church, our fundamental rules of governance and job responsibilities must also grow and mature. To that end, the Board of Trustees is endorsing a Proposed series of amendments to our Constitution and Bylaws – some minor and some not.

To introduce these changes to the Congregation (before the annual Meeting), the Board invites you come to one (or more) of a series of meetings we are planning in the coming weeks to introduce the amendments, let you ask questions, and hear your feedback (well before the annual Meeting, if you get my point.)

Right now the list of times are incomplete, but here are some of the scheduled times:

  • Sunday, April 7th: 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. (Children’s Chapel)
  • Sunday, April 14th: 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. (Children’s Chapel)
  • Other week days opportunities- TBD

I don’t want to give away all the juicy bits before the meeting, but here are a couple of teaser’s to get you interested . . .

  • Clarifying the Role of the Minister as a Chief of Staff
  • Turning the Financial Secretary position into a role that just everyone will want to volunteer to do
  • Improving our Membership requirements to be even better than they are already (Just look at all the new members last Sunday in the service!)
  • Making the Annual Report easier, better, and more representative of our church year (wish someone would have thought of this one years ago)
  • Dotting enough i’s and crossing enough t’s to make your head swim.

So plan on coming to one of our “Get to Know the Proposed Amendments to the Constitution/Bylaws Meetings” (Otherwise known as the GTKPACB Meeting – we love our acronyms)…and bring a friend (especially if they vote)!

Questions, contact Brian McDermott (I’m in the Directory).
WORKSHOP ON BECOMING A TRAUMA INFORMED COMMUNITY AND BUILDING STRATEGIES FOR RESILIENCY

The workshop, offered by highly acclaimed trainer Karen Simms, aims to deepen and broaden our understanding of trauma and to develop evidence informed and systems oriented strategies and tools for building resiliency. This work can create an important shift in our attitudes and responses to challenging behaviors. This is part of the two year initiative to bring more justice, skills, and compassion to ‘creating a culture of community engagement’. The workshop will be available on April 7 from 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the church in Fellowship Hall.
UPCOMING SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES
10:15 AM in Sanctuary
SOUND EFFECTS
APRIL 14
LED BY MATT SHEPPARD AND OTHER UUCUC MUSICIANS

We celebrate with music. We remember by music. We worship through music. Music and the arts are core human experiences, and on the 14th, we recognize the incredible role music plays in our lives. The choirs will perform, the instrumentalists will play, and the congregation will sing!
EASTER & EARTH DAY SERVICE
TRANSFORMATION AND WHOLENESS
APRIL 21
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW

This all-ages Easter and Earth Day Service will celebrate the power of transformation, in the natural world and the human spirit. The choir will be singing. All are invited to wear their favorite Easter hats! (Or make one).
WELCOMING
APRIL 28
LED BY THE WELCOMING COMMITTEE

Nearly 20 years ago this congregation officially became a "Welcoming Congregation" to the LGBTQ+ community. We are revisiting this commitment now, and deepening it. Come learn and be inspired by what "welcoming" can mean in the 21st century.
UPCOMING MEETINGS & EVENTS

Bookmark our UUCUC Events and UUCUC Calendar webpage for future reference.
WHITE FRAGILITY DISCUSSION GROUP

Join us on April 4 at 7 p.m. to discuss Dr. Robin DiAngelo’s book, White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism. We are meeting in the YRUU room, SW corner of the basement. All are welcome. If you haven’t read the book, but you are still interested, contact mona4shannon@gmail.com to borrow copy.
NEXT WEEK IS THE UUCUC SERVICE AUCTION - APRIL 13
THE THEME WILL BE ACROSS THE UU niverse

Please come to this year's UUCUC Service Auction, which will be on April 13th! The Service Auction is an event where members and friends of the church offer services for sale to each other, and these services are sold to the highest bidder (by a real live auctioneer!). All the proceeds of the sales go to the church. In fact, outside the Stewardship Drive, this is our most important fundraiser of the year. Find more details on our website: https://uucuc.org/auction

This will be a fun night of live music, dinner (just ask Matt Stasiewicz about the wonderful meal he's cooking up!), and good times spent with your fellow UUCUC friends. You are absolutely invited to attend and enjoy the festivities without buying any services or items.

This Sunday, after the Service, is your last chance to (non-electronically) buy tickets, submit a donation form, or volunteer to help out at the event!

Also, please consider donating your brilliant talents to this event. The submission deadline is upon us! You can donate by emailing Katie Madigan ( katie.r.madigan@gmail.com) or filling out THIS short online form! Please note, 9:00 PM Sunday is the deadline for the items being printed in the catalog. Thank you for considering submitting your donation!
UU VOICES BOOK GROUP - NEW BOOK ON JEWISH VOICES!

UU Voices Book Group will meet at noon on Sunday, April 14, Classroom 1. This group is facilitated by Rev. Caplow and all are welcome. We will begin Jewish Voices in Unitarian Universalism, available as an e-book or paperback on Amazon. Rev. Caplow also has a few copies available for loan. The book is not necessary for the April meeting of the group. For more information, contact minister@uucuc.org.
SECOND WORKSHOP SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 14 ON BECOMING A TRAUMA INFORMED COMMUNITY AND BUILDING STRATEGIES FOR RESILIENCY

In addition to the workshop on April 7, the workshop will be available again on April 14 from 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the church in Fellowship Hall.
BERNADINE STAKE'S CELEBRATION OF LIFE ON APRIL 20

Like Nebraska advertises,
“Honestly, it’s not for everyone,”
but better if you come.

Bernadine’s celebration of life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, April 20, at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Florence Caplow will be the Pastor, and Matthew Gladden will be the Pianist. A reception will follow at the Channing Murray Foundation, at 1209 W. Oregon in Urbana, at 3:00 p.m.
TWELFTH ANNUAL ECIRMAC 2019 FUNDRAISER BANQUET - SATURDAY, APRIL 27

Established in 1980, the East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center has provided services to refugees, immigrants, and their families who settle in East Central Illinois. This past year, we have served over 2,000 clients by providing a variety of services that include resettlement, translation, adjustment, citizenship, and a children’s tutoring program. Helping our clients is an ongoing process that requires tremendous efforts and support.

To benefit the work of the Refugee Center, the Twelfth Annual Fundraising Banquet will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at the Round Barn Banquet Centre located at 1900 Round Barn Road, Champaign, IL. For more information, CLICK HERE
RESOLVING CONFLICT, FINDING AGREEMENT - PART 1, APRIL 27 & PART 2, MAY 18

At a time when differences seem more pronounced, simple disagreements can turn into difficult conflicts. Join Gail Schiesser and Virginia Brubaker on Saturday, April 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to learn how to deal both more effectively and more comfortably with conflict. In this fun and hands-on experience, you will learn how to:

  • Identify and develop outcomes that are worth reaching;
  • Recognize your own style for conflict and begin to be more comfortable with other styles;
  • Discover the greater, more important goals that drives people to want something;
  • Discover what conditions will have to be met to secure an agreement in a particular conflict; and
  • Set a framework for an agreement between two parties.

This class will help anyone who finds themselves in situations where those around you are in conflict with each other from time to time. If you would like to be more helpful in those situations, this class is for you.

Virginia and Gail have taught communications skills for many years through the NLP Institute of Chicago. As partners in Common Sense Mediation, they resolved complex conflicts through mediation for couples and groups. Please feel free to call them if you have questions about this class. Virginia's number is 217-419-3106. To register, CLICK HERE.

Light lunch and child care provided on request. The registration form has a place for child care request and lunch preferences.

Part 2 is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. for anyone who has completed Part 1. Mark you calendar. Registration will open shortly.

GOODBYE TO ECIRMAC

ECIRMAC (East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center), our long-term tenants who do such great work supporting the immigrant and refugee communities, had been feeling that they were outgrowing their small offices in our building. They have found a wonderful new space in Champaign, shared with other immigration related non-profits, and they moved at the end of March. Their new address is 201 W Kenyon Rd, Suite 4D, Champaign 61820. We will miss them, but congratulations ECIRMAC! We will be honoring our long partnership on June 3rd.

We are still considering how best to use the space they have been occupying. Stay tuned!
MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
SUNDAY MORNING RELIGIOUS EDUCATION HAPPENINGS

April 7, 2019
Religious education classes are held this Sunday. Children in Kindergarten to 6th grade begin in worship.
  • Nursery: 10:00-11:30 in Room #3
  • Prekindergarten: 10:15-11:30 in Room #4
  • Coming of Age class will be on retreat.

Child Care Request Policy
If you have an event which would benefit from child care, reach out to our child care coordinator, Kelsey Libert. She is happy to work with you to organize child care. Here is the current child care request policy:
Email childcare@uucuc.org at least 48 hours in advance of your requested date and time of event. Please provide us with the number of children expected and their approximate ages so that we can be best prepared. We do our best to provide child care when needed but know there are times when members of our child care team may not be available. In the unlikely situation that one or two child care providers are not available, it is up to the sponsoring organization to find willing volunteers. All childcare workers (paid and volunteer) must have completed a UUCUC background check. The sooner a request is made, the more likely we are able to schedule child care providers. We will communicate arrangements once established and let you know if we run into any issues.

A joy shared by Thom and Sherry Bohlen
Our daughter, Alyssa, who we adopted in 1972, was reunited with her two half brothers, after submitting her DNA to Ancestry.com. Her brothers said they had been searching for their "lost" sister for a very long time.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE NEWS
UUCUC Shared Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections, designated checks written to UUCUC with organization's name written in the memo line, cash envelopes designated for "Shared Offering" within the specified month and on-line donations through our GIVE WEBPAGE .

During the month of April Sunday services’ shared offerings will support Independent Media Center (IMC).

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice in the Champaign County area.

IMC fosters the creation and distribution of media, art, and narratives emphasizing underrepresented voices and perspectives and promote empowerment and expression through media and arts education.

The IMC helps people in their responsible search for truth and meaning. Art and community gatherings allow people to tell their stories in powerful ways. The IMC provides an environment where money and other mainstream pressures play less on the immediate environment of the artist or group which allows for deeper criticism and a more illuminating or empowering fashion.
