A unique collection of live recordings from the seventeenth summer festival, the compilation journeys through history, uncovering Western classical music’s evolution in seven specific chapters. Each chapter focuses on an especially momentous decade, beginning with J. S. Bach and his contemporaries and culminating in the twentieth century’s final decade. The opening disc of Music@Menlo LIVE 2019 brings together a selection of music that set the stage for Bach’s resplendent First Brandenburg Concerto. The second then offers a snapshot of the eighteenth century’s final decade, when Haydn gave way to the voice of a new century. Disc three contrasts early and late masterworks of Haydn’s heir, Ludwig van Beethoven, while disc four presents a collection of quintessential German Romantic voices including Schumann and Brahms. The fifth volume of LIVE 2019 spotlights a cosmopolitan collection of Romantic composers: Chopin, Suk, and Rachmaninov, before part six celebrates the dynamism of the Roaring Twenties. The final volume in the collection explores music at the millennium, with works by John Adams and Bright Sheng. Produced by Grammy Award–winning engineer Da-Hong Seetoo, the recordings showcase performances from the 2019 summer festival by a roster of the world’s finest chamber musicians. Featured performers include pianists Juho Pohjonen, Gilles Vonsattel, and Wu Han; violinists Chad Hoopes and Angelo Xiang Yu; violists Hsin-Yun Huang and Paul Neubauer; cellists David Finckel and David Requiro; the Escher String Quartet; oboists James Austin Smith and Stephen Taylor; clarinetists Romie de Guise-Langlois and Tommaso Lonquich; bassoonist Peter Kolkay; and percussionist Ayano Kataoka.
