100% Match for Class of 2019!

Michael J. Trepal, DPM ('81), FACFAS, Vice President for Administration and Academic Dean, announced in mid-March that 100% of the Class of 2019 matched with a residency program! "Coupled with their 100% Board pass rate, they are in excellent position to move forward to the next phase of their Medical Education," he said. At the celebratory Match Day reveal on March 15, Dr. Trepal felt that many students had matched with their top choices. Faculty Changes to Mark 'New Year' on July 1
In March, Joel Sturm COO and Vice President for Administration, announced the following faculty changes:
Robert A. Eckles, DPM, MPH
, Associate  Professor of Orthopedic Sciences and Pediatrics, and Dean of Clinical Education and Graduate Medical Education, will transition from full-time to part-time after June 30 and after a summer sabbatical. Dr. Eckles joined the NYCPM faculty in 2003. He will return in September and continue to be course director for CAPSTONE and for Advanced Topics in Biomechanics and Sports Medicine. On March 11, the NYCPM Student National Podiatric Medical Association (SNPMA) hosted its 2
nd
Annual Multicultural Cook-Off, inviting culinary contestants from among NYCPM students, faculty and staff to cook their best.
A large panel of judges considered the entries:

Student Choice Awards Announced at Glittery FootBall
 On Saturday March 9, the winners of the 2019 Student Choice Awards were announced at the FootBall, the annual student gala. According to Marisa Giustiniano (2020),(left), the Student Association Treasurer who organized the event at Tribeca Rooftop, the "festivities served as an opportunity for us to highlight a few special professors for their extraordinary contributions." The winners are:
- 1st year Professor of the Year: Dr. Peter Barbosa
- 2nd year Professor of the Year: Dr. Gus Constantouris
- Medicine Attending of the Year: Dr. Karim Badawy

New Scholarship from Alumna Honors Classmate Who Passed Away During Residency
 Rosemay Michel, DPM ('96) (left),
a podiatrist at the Fayetteville, NC VA Medical Center and an alumna, has funded the Patricia A. Blount-Brown Memorial Scholarship at NYCPM.
Candidates for the scholarship will have to meet these criteria:
- Current 3rd year student in the 2nd half of the academic year
- Female, of color
- Minimum 3.2 GPA
- Previous nursing background preferred
- Involved in extracurricular activities/student organizations/community service.
The scholarship will be $1000. Dr. Michel will
 review all the applications for this scholarship so that she can lead the selection process. Susan Rice, DPM, the Chair of NYCPM's Scholarship Committee, will then work with her on gathering applicants for this scholarship.

The Bako Medical Education Foundation Announces Grant of Up to $100,000 for NYCPM Students
The Bako Medical Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to advance diagnostic excellence in the field of podiatry, announced a grant of up to $100,000 to the
New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM)
, to fund the newly established Bako Medical Education Foundation Scholarships. The grant, to be paid over four years, subject to certain conditions, will provide annual recognition and financial assistance to top accepted
New York College of Podiatric Medicine
students.
"The Bako Medical Education Foundation's grant will help NYCPM encourage and retain the brightest students," said Louis L. Levine, NYCPM President and CEO. "Every small grant assists a promising student who struggles with expenses."
The Bako Medical Education Foundation provides financial endowments to podiatric medical institutions to enable them to award scholarships.

March Blood Drive at NYCPM Helps Many
For almost 20 years, NYCPM students have organized an annual College blood drive in association with the New York Blood Center, which is responsible for collecting and transporting the donations. This year, 30 generous students, faculty and staff donated on March 11.

Selwyn Bottinick, DPM, Dies
Selwyn Bottinick, DPM (1956) died on March 9,  2019. He practiced in the greater Washington area. Joel Lang, DPM (1960) remembers him as a good friend and an ethical practitioner. Source: PM News.

Community Event
On Saturday, March 30, Monique Young, Administrative Assistant in FCNY, and students represented FCNY and NYCPM at Health First's Community Health Screening at Claremont Neighborhood Center in the Bronx. The students performed foot screenings and distributed information. According to Anthony R. Iorio, DPM ('81), MPH, "Several people commented on how helpful and responsive we were in providing education and services to a very important population."
Malika Reddy (2022) and Kevin Buczkowski (2020) represented FCNY at the Community Health Screening.
