District 6 Spotlight

Great American Litter Pick Up

Bascom Community Center
Saturday, April 13th, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Help us clean up litter in San Jose. To participate and sign up please call 408-535-4906. On the day of the event, register at your meeting location and receive litter cleanup supplies. At noon, join me for a celebration lunch at the Bascom Community Center. Lunch is free for volunteers.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The 20-hour CERT training will educate volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responder's can rely on during disaster situations, which allows them to focus on more complex tasks.

CERT Training is free to San Jose Residents. Training takes place on Friday evenings from 6:00 p.m. -10:00 p.m. and 2 consecutive Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Attendance required on all days for CERT certification.

       Introducing Midtown Connections       

O'Connor Park Auzerais Ave. & Race St.

A new neighborhood association has been established for the Midtown area of District 6: Midtown Connections. The area represented by this new association is bordered by Parkmoor Street, West San Carlos Street, Race Street and Meridian Avenue.

Mark your calendars now for Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at O'Connor Park (Auzerais Ave. & Race St.) for a neighborhood Spring Safety Fair! Learn about important safety topics from the San Jose Police Department, San Jose Fire Department and other agencies. You'll also have the opportunity to meet our District 6 Coucilmember, Dev Davis!

San Jose Clean Energy Bill Clinic

Do you have questions about your electricity bill and new @SJCleanEnergy charges? Attend a bill clinic at a community center or library near you! You'll also learn how to calculate your savings. San Jose Clean Energy's rates are 1% lower than PG&E's. You can find more information here



Responsible Landlord Engagement Initiative 

Michellé Jones Roberts, a long standing community advocate and member of the Buena Vista Neighborhood Association, Board, was one of a handful of community leaders recognized for their commitment to San Jose and the work they are doing to make our neighbors a better, cleaner, and safer place for everyone. 

On March 20th, Catholic Charities, the City of San Jose, and SJPD honored Michell é for her continued dedication to the neighborhood and community. Michell é has made a lasting and noticeable impact and we are honored to call her, not only a member of our neighborhood association but also, a neighbor and a friend.


 
U.S. Census Bureau

The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring - Working as a census worker can be a great way to make extra money while helping your community. The Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of people across the country to assist with the 2020 Census Count. In Santa Clara County alone, the Bureau is looking to hire over 1000 census workers for a variety of temporary jobs, including census takers (also referred to as enumerators), recruiting assistants, office staff, and supervisors. Positions offer excellent pay ($24-$33 hourly rate), flexible hours, and paid training. Find more information here.


"Snap, Click, Report"

Illegal fireworks are a neighborhood nuisance AND highly dangerous - so don't put up with them! Snap a photo and file a report online at sanjoseca.gov/fireworks . Fines can be as high as $1,000.

The fines for using fireworks are:
  • $500 for a first violation
  • $700 for a second violation (within 18 month period from date of previous violation)
  • $1,000 for a third violation (within 18 month period from date of previous violation)
  • The sale of fireworks may result in a fine up to $50,000 plus jail time, depending on quantity


Health Mobile 

Health Mobile delivers professional, quality health care to uninsured children from low-income families. Our services have been successful in reaching youth, previously neglected, by utilizing a health unit on wheels. We travel throughout California to schools, community centers, rural and urban areas, migrant camps and health fairs to respond to these children's health needs

Wheels and Wildlife

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center
1751 Grand Blvd, San Jose, CA 95002 
April 6th, 1:00-4:00 p.m. 

Did you know you could ride your bike on our Refuge trails? Join us for a bicycle tour around a salt pond at the Refuge! We will stop along the way to learn about habitat restoration, the wildlife and habitats they use, the importance of Coyote Creek watershed, and the history of the area! Presentations will be made by San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society, Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful and San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory! 

The ride is a gentle 4.5 miles on a level trail, and there is no shade along the way. All riders must provide their own bikes, backpack, and water bottles. Helmets are required for children. Water and snacks will be provided at a stop. Children ages 10 and older recommended; please use your best judgement on skill level for the distance. Reservations Recommended. Stamp Out Hunger 

The 27th annual Letter Carriers'  Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive   is on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations.These donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to people in need. There are many in San Jose and Santa Clara County that need our help. 

Last year, 71.6 million pounds of food were collected nationally, feeding approximately 64 million people.  

All donations to the Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive are tax-deductible because all of the food collected on Food Drive Day is given directly to non-profit charity food agencies in the community the food was collected. To learn how you can get involved, click here




Coyote Creek Cleanup
