Historic Santa Fe - then...

Last weekend we celebrated PRIDE here in Santa Fe on what is considered to be the centerpiece of our city, the Santa Fe Plaza. Located on the Plaza is the place where the original seat of the Spanish settlers government started, the Palace of the Governors. The picture above is a view of the Palace of the Governors in one of its earlier architectural iterations. It no longer looks (architecturally) like that picture or anywhere near that image as a matter of fact. Santa Fe architectural style has changed over the years. Santa Fe claims to be a city that 'prides' itself (no pun intended) on it respect for its history and architecture. There is even a stringent Historic District Review Board that oversees things such as renovations, upgrades & changes. Funny thing is, the architectural style and design of the city has changed many times depending on what the determinations become of this board or others who came before - who's sole purpose is to 'preserve and protect' the very essence or fabric of the city and its history. These changes appear to be driven by personalities and their interpretations of 'things'. What's truly concerning is that as you dig deep into the history, one can clearly see that all of these 'things' that affected the growth, development and 'look' of the city were truly based upon what the white men - both the white European (hispanic) settlers and the other white anglo settlers who were determined to create Santa Fe in their image and likeness. It's no wonder that when you scratch just a bit beneath the surface there is an unfortunate underbelly of racist views, disrespect, systemic racism and the procuring of land that belonged to others by these early and later settlers, the trafficking of native slaves from Mexico to the colony to labor for the 'white' men and the list goes on and on.
We must all learn about the place where we live. Both the good and the horrific things are all part of this history. That is my intention. We can not change the future without first trying to understand, respect and realize exactly what the past looked like and how we can create a better now and install meaningful change.
