Next Virtual Presentation - Functional Heartburn and Reflux Hypersensitivity – Commonly Encountered But Often Overlooked
Live on July 27, 2021, 11:00-12:00 GMT
Join us for a virtual presentation on functional heartburn and reflux hypersensitivity, commonly encountered but often overlooked. This presentation will shed light on the role of these disorders in refractory GERD and how to diagnose and manage them. Register for free.

ISDE leaders and members are celebrating 40 years of contributing to the development and dissemination of information about the esophagus. Join us in commemorating the success and impact of past ISDE World Congresses in the the following World Congress Spotlight Series.

World Congress Spotlight Series: Eleventh and Twelfth World Congresses

The 11th ISDE World Congress was held in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2008. It was presided over by Professors Janos Kiss, Peter Horvath, and Zsolt Tulassay (see photo). The ISDE President was Professor Peter Kahrilas, the first non-surgeon to be elected to the office. He established a new practice of leading the scientific program committee in designing the structure of the congress. This hands-on and collaborative approach to program development resulted in very high quality of the scientific content. Read the full eleventh and twelfth congress spotlight.

Biopsy forceps disruption paired with bougie dilation of esophageal strictures lengthens time to repeat intervention
DOTE Volume 34, Issue 6 | Quick Shot Article Review
Members Only Access
Esophageal strictures are commonly encountered in clinical practice and treated with dilation using balloons or bougies.
  • Biopsy disruption of stricture followed by dilation has sometimes been used in clinical practice to increase effectiveness of the dilation, but this has not been well studied.
  • In this retrospective study of 289 adults who had underwent esophageal dilation for a stricture, Hengehold et al. compare dilation techniques (balloon dilation +/- biopsy disruption to bougie dilation +/- biopsy disruption) to see if it increases time to repeat intervention.
  • Median follow-up of 52.9 months, bougie dilation with biopsy forceps disruption lead to prolonged time to repeat dilation (particularly in those with GERD) compared to bougie dilation alone or balloon dilation +/- disruption with biopsy forceps.
