Dear Parents,
This week we celebrated the gift of reading with our Enchanted Forest Book Fair. In our current technological society that is so driven by screen time, it is particularly endearing to see so many children get excited to get a book in their hands and explore it. Please ask your child about any items they may have purchased and be sure to encourage reading for pleasure. (I was in Annapolis this summer and happened to be walking behind a group of tweens. One of them said to the other, in astonishment, 'Did you know that Joe reads books even when he doesn't have to?') It broke my heart a little bit.
This week we also welcomed New Parents to a coffee in the library on Wednesday morning. It was well attended and parents reported positive experiences joining our school community. Thank you to everyone who attended and thank you to everyone who has made the new students and parents feel welcome.
A belated thank you to Javier Aguirre and Chris Connelly for, once again, anchoring the effort for the Monsignor Smyth Golf Tournament. The weather did not look promising but, due to excellent planning and maybe some intervention by Msgr. Duffy, the weather in the afternoon was completely tolerable and we had a very strong turnout. (Check our social media for pictures.) Thank you to everyone for participating and a special thank you to Fr. Alec for joining us again this year and an extra special thank you to Jim Johnson, for participating in his first tournament with us. Jim touched the lives for many of us here as a den father and football coach (and founder) of the Chevy Chase Boys Club. I had the honor of playing with him and his son Jimmy and I was reminded of what a friendly yet competitive guy he is and what a great role model he has always been.
The weather has turned ('Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air.') and with it comes our Winter Uniform policy. On Thursday, November 1st, the children begin wearing Winter Uniforms which means: no shorts for either PE or class. The girls may wear tights. For PE class, both boys and girls wear BS sweat pants. Just a reminder to PLEASE put your child's name on their coats, sweatshirts and lunch boxes.
Please remember about our Halloween Parade on Wednesday at 2:15. We will have ladies from the Sodality Bazaar judging costumes and we will have representatives from the HSA with a table set up for 'spirit' wear (double entendre intended).

Parent/teacher conferences will be held Friday, November 9th, from 1:30pm - 4:30pm and Monday, November 12th, from 8:30am - 1pm in 15 minute time slots (Friday is a 12:30pm dismissal and there is no school on Monday). Once again, we will be using PickATime, an online scheduler, to schedule the conferences.
The online scheduler is open and will close
on Thursday, November 8th. Parents received an email on Wednesday, October 24 with instructions on how to schedule a conference.
***K-5 conferences are with the teachers and parents ONLY (please do not bring any K-5 students or younger siblings to conferences). However, middle school students are expected to attend the conference with their parents.
There is no Aftercare on Friday November 9th!
Free child care will be available both days in the music room during conferences. This service is provided for parents to use during their conference time only. No sick children or children in diapers, please.

Halloween Parade
Wednesday, October 31
2:15pm on the blacktop
Please join us for the Annual Halloween Parade! The parade lasts about 15-20mins. Students in grades K-5 may bring their costumes to school and change before the parade. Middle school students attend, but do not participate in the parade. Every class will have a small Halloween celebration in the classroom before or after the parade (check emails from room parents for details).
Students may accessorize their uniforms with Halloween flare (socks, tights, hats, headbands, necklaces, etc.) It is not a dress down day!

Leave the cooking to Ledo Pizza Monday and Tuesday, November 5th and 6th.
Mention Blessed Sacrament when you order and 20% of the sales benefit BSS. Dine in or carry-out 5pm to 10pm.
New addition this year: all catering orders during the week that mention Blessed Sacrament will generate 10% of sales for BSS!

Come one, come all if you are a teen who needs service hours!
The Sodality Bazaar will take place on Saturday, November 10 and we need lots of help from teen volunteers.
We can put you to work (with adult supervision,) setting up and decorating on Friday, November 9 from 1pm-5pm. And we will need help all day Saturday beginning at 9am, and ending at approximately 5pm.

Many
Colors drive again this year, collecting coats for the neediest people in our area for this winter.
Our 7th grade will be on the blacktop collecting gently used and new coats on Thursday and Friday, Nov 8 and 9 during drop off in the am.
Please donate! If you don't have any used coats, coats in xl sizes and up are highly desirable and some people purchase coats from Walmart, Target, etc to give. Thanks.

Cold weather is on it's way. In order to keep costs down and provide a quick turnaround, all orders must be placed before next WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31ST. Production time is two weeks so items should arrive around November 15th.

The Sodality BAZAAR is coming your way on November 10 from 10am-3pm! Bring your whole family to this parish event for a fun day of kid's activities (rumor is that there is a hoops contest to see who is the King or Queen of shooting), scavenger hunt, raffle baskets, lunch, vendors, speciality foods, bake sale and huge rummage sale including used clothes, white elephants, and this year, Replay Toys (used toys) and Second Chance Sports (used sporting goods) has been added!

n advance of the bazaar, please clean out closets and the attic and donate gently used clothes for men, women and children, white elephants, used toys and sporting goods. Most desired items-designer labels, purses, Christmas sweaters, coats, prom dresses, good costume jewelry, serving pieces, tablecloths, frames, gardening items, kitchen items, crystal, silver, objets d'art, helmets, lacrosse and field hockey sticks, mitts, bikes, football pads, clears, golf clubs, rackets, etc. Not accepted-underwear, t-shirts, stuffed animals, pillows, large appliances and electronics, books or bedding. Donation hours for clothes, white elephants, toys and sporting goods will be Tues, Nov 6-8 from 8-4 at the parish center.
NO DONATIONS OF CLOTHES OR WHITE ELEPHANTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THURSDAY, BUT TOYS AND SPORTS EQUIPMENT WILL CONTINUE TO BE ACCEPTED FRIDAY AT THE GYM.
If your house is cleaned out already, consider baking something for the bake sale! Pies, cakes, cookies, brownies, bars, gluten free treats, muffins, and all of your other concoctions will be accepted Friday, Nov 9 from 3-5pm at the gym and Sat morn, Nov 10 from 7-10. Thanks!!!

Please take 5 minutes and visit the parish
Virtual Town Hall - an easy to use website engaging parish and school families for comment in response to the clergy abuse crises in the Church.
The site remains open for comments and voting through November 1st. Even if you don't feel like submitting a comment, please vote in agreement or disagreement with the comments already posted to the site. We are measuring sentiment in the parish on these topics in order to help inform next steps for parish leadership. The results of the virtual town hall also will be shared with the Archdiocese and the Bishops Conference.
