Reverse Reductions to the Operating Budget Made December 17, 2018
On Tuesday, April 2 the voters of District 86 approved the bond proposition, so as the Board said they would on February 5, a Special Meeting was held Wednesday, April 3. The purpose of the Special Meeting was to begin reversing cuts made December 17 to pay for safety and security upgrades and infrastructure repairs because the money to pay for those projects will come from the referendum and not the operating budget. The Board prioritized the consideration of activities and athletics because those items directly affect students to account for significant lead time in scheduling.
The Board voted to reinstate all IHSA-sponsored activities and sports: bass fishing, wrestling, swimming and diving, water polo, danceline, competitive cheerleading, and football, as well as all of the activities associated with football, cheerleading, poms, and marching band.
The Board also voted to reinstate eliminated activities in an amount not to exceed $300,000 total, with the spend proportional to student enrollment at Central and South. The Board asked Activities Directors to bring a proposal of recommended activities for each school to the April 8 meeting, with the understanding that National Honor Society would be one of the reinstated activities.
Bid for Construction Management Firm
Because the voters approved the bond proposition April 2, the Board began Wednesday night the work that will lead to construction by inviting the District’s owners representative Dorothy McCarty from Cotter Consulting to present a high level overview of the process. Wanting to balance getting to work as soon as possible on the lengthy bidding process with the need to follow the proper steps to do it right, the Board said it will hold a Facilities Committee meeting to discuss the matter in greater detail. As such, a Facilities Committee meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on April 8, immediately preceding the Committee of the Whole meeting.
