February 2, 2020 ~ Building Community One Positive Story at a Time
The Sun Will Rise Foundation
Grief Support Group Meeting
Fourth Monday of Every Month
7:00p - 8:30p
1029 Pleasant St., Bridgewater Pediatrics
The Sun Will Rise Foundation exists because Robyn Houston-Bean lost her twenty year old son Nicholas Bean to an accidental overdose in May of 2015. Trying to find purpose and a reason to go on after a traumatic sudden loss, she knew that when she could function again, she would do something in his memory. Knowing the value of peer grief support groups, and the need for some in her area, she decided to start a Massachusetts grief support group called The Sun Will Rise, for those that have lost a loved one to overdose or substance use disorder.

The Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit charity, provides the support groups and education, awareness and prevention. Speaking in front of parents, community members and teens at schools and other venues, Robyn has shared her family’s story to let people know that substance use disorder can happen to any family. She shares with parents, the risk factors that she feels she missed and urges teens to be part of the solution by helping their friends if they are worried about their use of alcohol or drugs. She tries to help erase the preconceived notions people have about those with substance use disorder and erase the stigma.

Meetings are also held in the following locations: Braintree, Weymouth, Quincy, Raynham, Brockton, Foxboro, Maynard, & Newburyport.

Ships and Shipbuilding in MA
Photo credit: New Bedford Whaling Museum

Shipbuilding is one of the oldest industries in the United States with roots in the earliest colonial settlements. Shipbuilding quickly became a successful and profitable industry in Massachusetts, with its miles of coastline featuring protected harbors and bays and extensive supplies of raw materials.

The early wooden vessels built for commercial fishing and foreign trade also gave rise to a variety of ancillary trades and industries in the area, including sail making, chandleries, rope walks and marine railways.

The whaling merchants of New Bedford operated a complex business network of finance, shipbuilding, barrel making, insurance, ship supply, and rope and sail making. The sponsors and agents of the ships earned huge profits and for a time New Bedford was considered to be the "richest city in the world." Today, New Bedford includes a broad array of business, residential and institutional structures exemplifying the Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian styles of architecture; museums, historical exhibits, and records which convey the importance, diversity, and financial power of the whaling era.

Old Bridgewater Historical Society Presents:
“Follow the Money: Go-to Records for Tracing
Ancestors on the Move”

Sunday, February 9 th
2:00p
Memorial Building, 162 Howard Street, West Bridgewater
Our ancestors moved near and far seeking economic opportunities, religious freedom, and closeness to family. These mobile ancestors can be notoriously difficult to research. When this occurs, we follow the paper trail that our ancestors left behind in the form of deeds, probate records, tax rolls, pension files, and more. This talk will provide strategies on how to use these records to track your ancestors across America and overseas.

Presented by Melanie McComb, a staff genealogist for American Ancestors and the New England Historic Genealogical Society. She is also an international lecturer with expertise in Irish genealogy, New England, Prince Edward Island, Jewish genealogy, DNA, social media, and military records. Melanie is a blogger known as The Shamrock Genealogist.

Admission is free; a $5 donation is suggested. Light refreshments will be provided. In case of inclement weather, the program will be postponed to February 16 th at 2:00p.

This program has applied for support from the Bridgewater Cultural Council which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. ( massculturalcouncil.org)
The Old Bridgewater Historical Society, a private organization, started in 1894, is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and publication of history relating to the original Bridgewater area, which includes the towns of Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, and the city of Brockton. Fuller Craft Museum Presents
2020 Biennial Members Exhibition
Exhibition: February 8 – November 8, 2020
Reception: February 8, 4:00 – 6:00p (free with musuem admission)
455 Oak Street, Brockton

Fuller Craft Museum’s membership base is critical to the health and growth of the museum’s identity, as an institution is only as good as its body of support in the community. Accordingly, Fuller Craft Museum is proud and privileged to present the  2020 Biennial Members Exhibition , featuring 37 Museum members—young students, mid-career makers, and those who have been full-time artists for decades. With approximately 275 works submitted for this year’s exhibition, it is clear that ambitious and enthusiastic advocates for artistic expression are prevailing across the spectrum of generational diversity. In addition, the ceramics, furniture, photography, fiber, woodturning, and other craft media in this year’s show speak to the multidimensional set of ways in which individuals are communicating through material means.

Associate Curator Michael McMillan is the lead curator for this exhibition. Fuller Craft Museum would like to thank this year’s juror, Emily Zaiden, Director of the Craft in America Center in Los Angeles, CA, for taking on the difficult task of deliberating and selecting the pieces for this exhibition. The show wonderfully echoes Fuller Craft’s mission to highlight the joys of the handmade.

Bridgewater Public Library
New program series, FREE and open to the public. The first presentation on Floor Cloths will be given by local resident Cynthia White

What are Floor Cloths? According to Wikipedia “Floor Cloths is a medium of expression. Most modern floor cloths are made of heavy, unstretched canvas with two or more coats of gesso. They are then painted and varnished to make them waterproof. In the past few decades, the desire to decorate homes in a more personal way has stimulated their popularity. Unique designs are made in a variety of styles and colors, using many techniques. This gives today's floor cloths the ability to be created for any style interior.”

Cynthia is new to her current hobby but is happy to share her knowledge and passion with everyone. There will be on display the various stages of the process. We hope you join us and learn something new!

What is your passion? The Bridgewater Public Library is looking for volunteer presenters for a new program series at the library: Passion Projects. What hobby or vocation do you have that you are passionate about and want to share with others? Maybe you are a taxidermist, or a woodworker, a stamp collector, or an herbalist. Maybe you know a lot about wine or cheese or tea. Possibly you can talk about yoga or meditation. Do you keep chickens? Have you built your own Tiny Home? Everyone's an expert in something. What's your expertise? Share your interests and knowledge with your fellow residents here at the library. Interested persons can contact us by email at rmamakos@bridgewaterma.org  with your name and your Passion Project!

Americana
I was raised in this American Dream of opportunity. "American Ingenuity" "Freedom of choice." It's why I was empowered to learn and make my life better, and empowered to launch the BuzzAround.

It's with the wisdom of years that I have come to understand the ways that not everyone is given access to that American Dream. Sometimes it is systematic or individual bigotry or sexism.

Many voices have cried out in desperation and anguish and have brought us here to where we can see it, name it and work on changing.

The good news is that we have the ability to change... to change our communities, to change our policies and our government, to give everyone fair access to that American Dream.
The Buzz Around has embarked on the process of documenting the ways which we benefit society. Businesses can operate to help achieve the American Dream and take care of our planet. It does not have to be either/or it can be and/ both! Onward and upward!
