Roslyn Public Schools
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
March 23, 2020

Dear Roslyn Families,

Since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, school officials everywhere have used their networks of communication to help disseminate information from public health officials. The purpose of these messages - whether about personal hygiene, social distancing, or protecting the most vulnerable - has been to amplify the announcements made by medical professionals. We do not have the authority to identify anyone who has the virus, or dispense medical advice. Moreover, schools have a solemn obligation to protect the anonymity of students, staff members and their families.

Any confirmed cases at this stage are certainly not unexpected. With more testing, sooner or later there were bound to be cases identified within our school community. We remain in frequent communication with the district's medical director and the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDoH) and continue to follow their directives. NCDoH investigates positive cases of COVID-19.

Medical professionals advise: Anyone who has symptoms of a respiratory illness - cough, fever, difficulty breathing - should assume they have been exposed to COVID-19 and seek medical attention right away. Isolate yourself until you are well. Because the virus is now so widespread in our area, even if you have no symptoms, the most responsible thing you can do is to assume you've been exposed anyway. Keep your distance from others. Stay home. Consider those who are most vulnerable, and how easily they could become infected by someone who does not even know they are carrying the virus. It is everyone's responsibility to help "flatten the curve" so our health care system is not overwhelmed. If that happens, people may not be able to get the care they need, including those with unrelated medical condition

Outdoor Facilities Are Now Closed
Public parks - state, county, town and village - have been closed. To stop public gatherings of any size, the school district is doing the same. All outdoor facilities, including playing fields, tracks, playgrounds, tennis courts and basketball courts, are closed until further notice.

We are committed to protecting our community and the greater region.
Stay well, Roslyn.

Sincerely,
Allison Brown
