Less Grumbling, More Humbling

Grumbling! The crowd around Jesus-the "in" crowd, that is-was grumbling. Grumbling because Jesus welcomed those who traditionally had been set apart: tax collectors and sinners. Who are those who cause us to grumble? Whose seemingly undeserved handout or unearned status change filled our hearts with resentment this week? Jesus speaks to us because we too often see life as a game with winners and losers, points and playbooks, offense and defense. Can we open our hearts and minds to hear Sunday's humbling good news?

God's love is freely shared with all: we cannot earn it, we cannot deserve it. When we attend worship, we do so out of thanksgiving and praise for God's glory, hunger and thirst for God's word and sacrament. We do not attend worship to achieve some status within God's kingdom. When we help a neighbor, share with a stranger, assist the afflicted, or acknowledge the overlooked we do so because Christ first did the same for us.

We respond to God's grace and mercy with our own feeble attempts to emulate God's perfect love. It is challenging, exhausting, never-ending, perspective-altering, radically humbling work. It's work that is impossible to do without the inspiration of Christ, the nourishment of wine and bread, and the strength of the saints who have gone before us and with whom we walk Christ's path today. Let us find those in our world who teach us about Christ's unending reconciliation, so that we can all celebrate and rejoice as the family of God. [Sundays and Seasons, 2019]

So what less grumbling, more humbling work is God calling you to this Lent?

Journeying to the Cross Together,
Bill+

Soup Supper and Contemplative Prayer

We may think of prayer as thoughts or feelings expressed in words. But this is only one expression. In the Christian tradition Contemplative Prayer is considered to be the pure gift of God. It is the opening of mind and heart - our whole being - to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. Through grace we open our awareness to God whom we know by faith is within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than choosing - closer than consciousness itself. Message from Susan, All Saints' Earth Care Missioner
"At God's command, all things came into being, the vast expanse of interstellar space galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. " BCP Eucharistic Prayer C

I hope you have had a chance to check out the new Earth Care bulletin board in the Parish Hall.  The design is based on the Episcopal Creation Care website which you will find here: Creation Care  Bishop Curry breaks down what Earth Care means for us:  Loving, Liberating and Life-giving. The Carbon Fast that we have been focused on these past few weeks falls under what Bishop Curry calls Life-Giving: "We will change our habits and choices to live more simply, humbly, and gently on the Earth."
Week 5: April 1-7 Focus on Transportation:
April 1 : Plan your errands to make only one trip into town; park and walk while you do your errands.
April 2: Make a plan to carpool to church on Sunday(s).
April 3: Calculate your Carbon Footprint for transportation here: Footprint
April 4:  Check your car's tire pressure. Properly inflated tires improve the car's gas mileage.  Good for the planet and the wallet.
April 5: Planning a getaway?-consider taking the train or a bus instead of flying.   April 6:  Lower your driving speed.  You can improve your gas mileage 10-15% by driving at 55 mph rather than 65 mph.
April 7: Walk or carpool with neighbors to church.

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK!
