New Konwakai Chair Appointment

CJR's Co-Director, Professor Yves Tiberghien, has been appointed the Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research at the Institute of Asian Research (IAR), School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, as of July 1, 2021 for a two-year term. Join CJR in congratulating him!

Professor Tiberghien's forthcoming book, The East Asian Covid-19 Paradox (Cambridge University Press), the first element in the Cambridge Elements series on Politics and Society in East Asia, will be available online shortly. Stay tuned!
A Virtual Information Session

Call for Project Collaborators
The Japanese Women Director Project

Professor Colleen Laird (UBC Asian Studies) has launched a Japanese Women Directors Project, a public-facing platform which will feature a variety of voices and visions showcasing the works of women working in Japanese film industries. She is currently inviting collaborators who might be interested in participating.

Zoom Event by the UBC Museum of Anthropology (MOA)

Join MOA for a virtual conversation with Atsunobu Katagiri, a featured artist in A Future for Memory: Art and Life After the Great East Japan Earthquake, and Fumihiko Futakami, Curator of the Minamisōma City Museum. The conversation will be facilitated by MOA Curator Fuyubi Nakamura and followed by a live Q & A with Atsunobu Katagiri (in English). Vancouver Art Gallery’s Interim Chief Curator/Associate Director, Diana Freundl and UBC student Yuval Kehila will join the Q & A session.

The guest speakers will discuss their personal experiences and involvement in the recovery process following the 2011 triple disaster. Katagiri will share his artistic connection to Minamisōma City in Fukushima Prefecture. Futakami will speak about his curatorial experience working with artists who came to make art in his region, including Katatgiri and Masao Okabe, who are featured in A Future for Memory from the perspective of a curator from the disaster region. The conversation (pre-recorded in Japanese, with English subtitles) will be followed by a live Q & A with Atsunobu Katagiri (in English).

記憶のための未来―東日本大震災後のアートと暮らし』に出展している華道家・片桐功敦さんと南相馬市博物館学芸員の二上文彦さんとの対談です。展覧会担当キュレーターの中村冬日が進行役をつとめます。
 
震災後の復興における経験や取り組みについてお話されます。片桐さんは作品制作を通しての南相馬市とのつながりについてお話されます。二上さんは3.11を直接経験した者としての視点から、被災地の学芸員としての試みについてお話されます。二上さんは「記憶のための未来」展出展作家の片桐功敦さんや岡部昌生さんをはじめ、震災後に南相馬市を訪れた多くのアーティストと活動をしてきました。
 
対談は事前に録画されたもので、日本語で行います(英語字幕付き)。対談後には片桐さんがライブで英語による質疑応答を行います。

Program to Strengthen Livelihood and Business Foundations for Japanese Nationals Overseas and People of Japanese Descent (Nikkei)

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is currently accepting applications for Program to Strengthen Livelihood and Business Foundations for Japanese Nationals Overseas and People of Japanese Descent (Nikkei). The program provides assistance for organizations and groups that support Japanese nationals overseas and Nikkei (Japanese descents) whose livelihoods have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Registration and Second Call for Papers

The 2021 Japan Studies of Canada (JSAC) Annual Conference will be hosted at the Thompson River University, Kamloops, BC, from September 30 to October 3, 2021, with a possible Saturday night banquet, and an optional post-conference field trip on Sunday, October 3 to Lillooet. Scholars, students, and all interested parties are welcome. 

This year, the conference will explore the theme, "the Impacts of Japan and Canada Hosting the World: Catalyzing Change through Cultural, Economic, Political, and Sporting Events", as well as other topics including - Japanese Language; Popular Culture & Mass Media; Literature, Visual, and Performing Arts; Economic Development & Sustainability; Politics, Security & Safety; Religion, Philosophy, History, and Culture; Architecture and Aesthetics; Regional Planning & Community Development; Technology & Science; Education; Food & Agriculture; and Consumption.

If you are interested in attending the conference, please send your responses to the following 4 questions with your name and email address to Tom Waldichuk ([email protected]) by Thursday, July 15, 2021, to determine whether the conference will be online, or a combination of in-person and online (hybrid).  
Note: We are currently allowed to meet face to face on campus. We will also allow online presentations.
