From Our President

Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends,

I hope you will join me in celebrating the many endeavors and accomplishments of our students that are highlighted throughout this issue of the Magnificat Monthly. Thank you for all you continue to do to encourage and support these talented young women. We have much to be grateful for as we look back and much to be excited about as we look to our vision for the future!

It's hard to believe that we are less than two months away from the end of the school year! Please keep the members of the Class of 2019 in your prayers as they prepare for graduation and the next chapters that await them. These students have done incredible things throughout their time at Magnificat and have grown into true leaders in the classroom and beyond.

I wish you many blessings as we move through the final weeks of Lent in preparation for the joyful hope of the Easter season.

In the Spirit of Mary's Magnificat ,
Moira Clark '77

P.S. Please join us next week for the Spring Open House & Art Show. All are welcome!
A Prayer for April
by Katie Higgins, Theology Teacher

Creator God,

Awaken us to the beauty
springing forth from the Earth,
to the blossoming crocuses and daffodils,
to the birds' songs and busy building of nests,
to the slow greening around us.

As winter nears its end,
help us to be patient and steadfast,
trusting that with your grace upon grace,
there is also a slow greening within us.

Cultivate our hearts
so that seeds of hope may spring up.
Renew our spirits so that they may be transformed mysteriously
in the light and darkness of these forty days
and by the love incarnate
in your suffering, death, and resurrection.

Amen.

We invite you to read Sr. Helen Jean's April Reflection  "Unless the Grain of Wheat."

Please join us this month on Wednesday, April 10 for the recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. All are welcome!

Health and Wellness Day

Dr. Nora McNamara '86
O n March 27, students and staff participated in the 2nd annual Health  and Wellness Day in support of our Mission "to educate young women holistically." The day afforded the members of the Magnificat community invaluable opportunities to learn about health and wellness and how to practice self-care.

Special thanks to keynote speaker, Dr. Nora McNamara '86,  Principal Investigator, Discovery and Wellness Center for Children at  University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, who shared insights from neuroscience about how we can help children and adolescents develop the best brains possible.

In addition to the keynote presentation, students also participated in a wellness reflection activity with their advisories and rotated through a variety of interactive sessions, including self-defense, spiritual wellness, yoga, and nutrition. Many thanks to the session facilitators, who included Magnificat faculty and staff, alumnae, and community members!
"Getting in Shape: Glimpsing Physical Fitness History through Magnificat School Newspapers"

This month's Archives Antics feature, written by archivist Mary Cay Doherty, will continue with the final article of a three-part series about the history of athletics at Magnificat.

* * *

"The sports pages of our school newspaper reveal that beyond the world of intramural and interscholastic sports, Magnificat's young women were keyed into the evolving world of recreational fitness. Our students were unaware at the time that Magnificat's first decades were coinciding with shifting sands in American ideas about exercise and its role in health and wellness beyond dieting. While today we embrace exercise as a necessary measure to preserve health, concrete links between disease prevention and exercise were just emerging in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s...
