Dear 12 Metre Owners, Crews & Enthusiasts,

Happy Spring! I just spent last weekend watching the new America's Cup boats race on the Hudson River off of New York City. The first day was overcast with no racing due to lack of wind. The second day was perfect with both sun and wind. However, it was a far cry from the mono-hull racing we grew up with. The 40 footers do not compare at all with the beauty of our 60 footers.

One of the 12-Metre Yacht Club's new members, Paul Cheek, had a bird's eye view of the racing and hosted our Vice-Commodore, Bee Hovey, along with other members of the Manhattan Yacht Club. The MYC has an America II syndicate of 5 or 6 members who own and actively race US-46. They have recently purchased US-42, she is now undergoing a total refit at NEB and is expected to join US-46 in New York Harbor next season. One or both will join our 2017 "Meterfest" and ultimately the 2019 Worlds in Newport.

Other boats getting ready for our 2017 and 2019 events include Bruno Bich's France I -- now practicing off the west coast of France at Trinite Sur Mer. Owners of Nyala, Ikra and KZ-7 (now in Europe) have expressed interest to ITMA's S. Europe VP, Luigi Lang. Closer to home, Harry Graves and his sons are restoring Lionheart with an eye to the 2017 Meterfest and Easterner's new owner hopes to complete her restoration in time for the 2016 North American Championship. I will continue to provide status updates on 12s that we have not recently seen in relation to growing participation in our 2017-2019 events.

In this E-Newsletter, we are happy to welcome three new contributors:
  • Vice-Commodore, Chandler (Bee) Hovey on handicap systems;
  • David Pedrick on changes to 12mR Class Rules;
  • Stephen Lirakis shares some personal 12-Metre history and his photographic library
We hope that you will read, enjoy and share!

Sincerely,
James Gubelmann

P.S. Is it time renew your 12MYC Membership?
In order to streamline our membership process and reduce confusion, last September (2015) we changed our Annual Membership to a CALENDAR YEAR basis. At that time we credited all membership renewals with the remainder of 2015 AND ALL of 2016 (15 months total). If you have joined or renewed since September 2015, your 12 MYC membership remains valid through December 31, 2016 and should be indicated on your card. IF NOT, it's now time to renew or join for 2016. It is only with your help that we can keep the 12MYC moving forward in support of the Newport 12 Metre fleet. Thank you!

"Meterfest" Regatta Update from Jamie Hilton
Jamie HiltonThere is clearly much interest in having a "Metrefest" event in Newport, and it seems likely that one WILL happen in 2017, however there is not much news to report at this time. Thus far, indications of interest have been received from the 2.4mR, 6mR and 12mR fleets. Discussions with potential event hosts / organizing authorities-- New York Yacht Club, Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Sail Newport revealed preliminary interest in involvement with race management, shore side festivities and/or docking arrangements.

The major question still under consideration is the timing of the event. The original thought was to hold it from June 7-11 in order to dovetail with the NYYC Regatta. Recently however, some classes suggest that a September date may yield more participants. We will continue to examine logistics to determine the best dates to draw the largest possible fleets for each class.

The "Metrefest" is still on the drawing board, but the aim is to create a regatta that brings together as many "Metre boat classes" as is practical and possible, ergo the nickname "Meterefest." All International Rule classes may be included in this event. If you have contact with other class(es) representative(s) willing to help get their fleet(s) to this event please email me.

Building Courageous by Stephen Lirakis
Stephen Lirakis
Stephen keeping the lead flowing.
In 1973 I accepted a job at Minneford's Yacht Yard to build aluminum boats lured by the assurance that I would build the next Sparkman & Stephens twelve meter; the first in aluminum. Interestingly the decision had been taken to supply the offsets in metric; a departure from tradition. The reason being that it would be more precise-- the plans for the keel were supplied in tenths of a foot. Finding metric rulers in 1973 was not as easy as today, as well having to find a tape in tenths.

Courageous' keel out of the mould.
The plans for a twelve meter were delivered in the fall of 1973. This boat was originally going to be sailed by Bill Ficker and his team. We even built a mock up of the boat which we could heel, Bill and the crew came to try the layout and make suggestions. Due to circumstances Bill and his team were out. Olin instructed us to continue work on the boat as he looked for a new syndicate.

Only two of us were assigned to the build during this time. To further retard our progress, no scantlings existed for aluminum twelve meters. We developed scantlings that we proposed to Lloyd's and then had to wait for their approval. As we laid down the lines of Courageous, it became clear that her design was an evolution of Constellation and Intrepid; with subtle and progressive innovations, all within The Rule. We built...

Message from Vice Commodore, Chandler (Bee) Hovey
Chandler _Bee_ Hovey It is troubling that the 12 Metre fleet in Newport has remained about the same size over the past decade. More than two years ago, Jimmy Gubelmann, working with ITMA, re-formed the 12 Metre Yacht Club, Newport Station with the intent to assist the 12 Metre Class to expand its numbers. The Club's objective, as stated in its charter, is to renew and broaden interest in this well-known class. Two important class events for which we are currently planning are the 2017 Metrefest and the 2019 World Championship, both to take place in Newport. I mention these dates with the aim of drawing the attention of potential new owners and charterers.

Over the past few months I have contacted past and present 12 Metre owners and crew, yacht brokers, designers, yacht club officers, race organizers and more to ask for ideas to help the fleet grow. Briefly, the suggestions break up into two camps 1) Maintain the racing in its current format with the 12s competing boat for boat in their respective divisions or 2) Adopt a rating system which allows the 12s to compete against each other on corrected time in one fleet. There are many pros and cons for each approach and many possible refinements for each. I am asking you, our readers to contact me with your comments on these two approaches. I plan to include your comments for publication in our next issue in June. I look forward to hearing from you!

Twelve Metre Class Rule Stability by David Pedrick

David Pedrick
The Class Rule for Twelves has changed very little since the time of the America's Cup Jubilee in Cowes in 2001. The major change made prior to that event was Appendix E, created to categorize older yachts and grant rating credits for design obsolescence with age, including generational changes in appendage configuration. A Propeller Allowance was also created to give partial credit for the hydrodynamic drag of a propeller installation and the compromised weight distribution from the engine.

Prior to the 2001 Rule, the contents of the 1985 Rule for the final America's Cup regatta in Twelves was substantially reorganized in 1994 and issued for the NYYC's Sesquicentennial Regatta. The text format of the Rule has remained essentially unchanged since then, other than adding Appendix E in 2001.

Between 2001 and 2013, the principal Rule change was in sail materials for the Classics. Initially, Division C was defined solely as having a keel-hung rudder, with sub-divisions of C1 for post-WW II, C2 for pre WW II (under Rules 3 and 2), and C3 for the first Rule, gaff-rigged. The sail material specification for all of Division C had a maximum fiber modulus of 250 grams/denier. For reference, the modulus limit in the main Rule was 1000 gm/den, suitable for...  read more

Challenge Twelve
was built by Steve Ward for the Perth Western Australia based Challenge Syndicate and used as a trial horse for Australia II.  She was completely dismantled, restored and upgraded to the highest standards in 2007, fitted out with a new single extrusion mast, carbon winches with a new North Sails inventory in 2009. One of the few "modern" Twelves" with the very attractive low free board, she has been stored inside for the past several years, she is ready to sail and realistically priced.

Message from the Fleet Captain, Herb Marshall

Herb Marshall
After many years of representing the Americas Fleet for ITMA, I believe it's time for a change. Currently, between the charter business, opportunities on the Cape, and visiting a spread-out family (a grand-daughter), I don't see that I have the time necessary to effectively represent the Americas Fleet, seek out sponsors, plan regattas and the up-coming International events, etc. 2016 will be year 30 for me with America's Cup Charters and at least 10 years as your VP of the Americas Fleet. It has been the most gratifying experience that I could ever imagine. Having my children working and racing with me and being involved with Newport's 12 Metre's America's Cup history has been incredible. Sailing and competing with friends, legends and being part of the 2001 Jubilee has been the Best . Having my wife Sally support me through it all-Priceless!

For my own part, it has been a privilege to serve and represent the Class. As the Class moves into this season and continues planning for 2017 & 2019, it needs someone more local and with time to spearhead the campaigns. Now is a good time to start that process. My desire would be to step down at our June 9th Americas Fleet meeting, thus providing an opportunity to bring on the next V.P.

Believe me there are no regrets, discouragement or otherwise, but only praise and thankfulness for the opportunity of serving. I have been and continue to be deeply blessed and honored by having worked alongside all of you: the ITMA officers, 12 Metre owners, crew and the charter business as a whole.

Sincerely,

Herb Marshall
