Spring General Election is Tomorrow, 4/2/19

The 2019 Spring General Election will be held throughout Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. Wind Point residents may vote at The Prairie School (Johnson Athletic Center),
4050 Lighthouse Drive,
between the hours of 7:00 am and 8:00 pm.
Several statewide and local contests are on the ballot, including Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice, Court of Appeals Judge for District 2, Racine County Circuit Court Judges for Branches 3 and 7, Racine County Executive, Racine Unified School Board Member for District 9, Wind Point Municipal Judge, Wind Point Village President, and three seats on the Wind Point Village Board.

Absentee Voters
In-person absentee voting is now closed. If you requested an absentee ballot be sent to you, it must be returned to the Village Clerk, 215 E Four Mile Rd., by 5:00 pm on election day in order to be counted.
Voter Registration
Forgot to register? It's not too late! Residents wishing to register or re-register to vote may do so at the polls on election day. Please note that you must present a "Proof of Residence" in order to register. A proof of residence document must include the voter’s name and current residential address. This

Wind Point residents are invited to meet the finalists for the Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer position at a reception at the Village Hall, on Friday, April 12, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Casey Jones Appointed to the Village Board
|
|
At its meeting of March 14, the Village Board unanimously appointed Casey Jones to fill the Board vacancy created by the January 26th resignation of Robert Quam. Mr. Jones will serve the remainder of Mr. Quam's term, which expires in April 2020.
For Mr. Jones, this is a return to the Village Board; he previously served as a Trustee from 2006 to 2013. In addition to his experience as a Trustee, Mr. Jones has worked as the Volunteer & Experiential Programs Manager and as an adjunct faculty member at UW-Parkside. He holds a BS in Labor Economics and Sociology from Parkside.
Mr. Jones said he looks forward to the opportunity to give back to the community where he has been a long-time resident.

Yard Waste Collection Resumes April 1...

Curbside yard waste collection resumes on April 1 for the 2019 growing season, and continue weekly every Monday through November.
As in the past, yard waste must be placed in a paper yard waste bag, and the bag must have a John's Disposal Yard Waste sticker attached.
Bags can be purchased at hardware stores and other retailers throughout the area (prices may vary). Stickers cost $1.00, and they may be purchased at the Village Office, 215 E Main Street, weekdays between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. Residents are welcome to use stickers that were purchased in prior years.
Please place your yard waste bags at the road side on Mondays. Remember to leave at least four feet of clearance between the bags and your trash or recycling bins.

...and Branch Collection Resumes April 9

Curbside branch collection will resume on Tuesday April 9 and continue on the 2nd Tuesday of each month through November.
Branch piles do *not* require a yard waste sticker to be collected.
In order to provide this service efficiently, please remember these rules:
- This service is offered to property owners who are maintaining or trimming their own trees. A landscaper or tree service that removes a tree is responsible for disposing of the branches. Village staff can not remove branches that were cut by a landscaper or tree service.
- Remember "4 by 4 by 4": Place the branches by the roadway in small, reasonably uniform piles. Piles should not exceed 4 feet in height and 4 feet in width, and individual branches should not exceed 4 inches in diameter. However, please don't cut the branches into shorter lengths. Leave them at full length with the cut end toward the road.
- Make sure the branch piles are near the edge of the road and away from mailboxes or other obstructions.
- Piles should be set out no earlier than the Saturday before collection day.
- Stumps, vines, root balls, roots, rocks, brush, rubbish, construction material or metal will not be collected since they will damage the collection equipment.
- If collection cannot be completed on a given day, the remainder of the route will be completed the next work day(s). However, to maintain scheduled operations, we cannot “backtrack” to collect branches set out late.
- Any piles that require more than 15 minutes to collect and chip will be tagged and the owner will have the option to remove the piles or have them collected for a fee.

Lighthouse Tower Climb Dates Set
|
|
Climbing to the top of the Wind Point Lighthouse--among the oldest and tallest on the Great Lakes--is an unforgettable thrill. Every one of the 144 iron steps takes you a little bit closer to one of the most spectacular views in southeastern Wisconsin.
If you've never climbed to the top, this is your year to do it. Even if you've been up there before, it's never too soon to do it again.
The 2019 schedule for open tower days at the Wind Point Lighthouse is now set. Tours start at the top and bottom of the hour, from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. For 2019, three Saturdays have been added to the schedule to meet the demand.
Moonrise Tower Climbs at the Lighthouse
For the first time ever, the Wind Point Lighthouse will be hosting moonrise tower climbs on two upcoming full-moon evenings. The events will take place on May 18 at 7:30 p.m. and September 14 at 7:00 p.m. Participants will have an opportunity to climb the tower and spend time at the top watching the moon rise over Lake Michigan. After the climb, light refreshments will be served in the Village Hall.
Each moonrise event is limited to 18 climbers. The fee is $40 per person, and the events will take place rain or shine. Participants are asked to bring a small flashlight or headlamp to assist them in the climb.

Permits and Inspections Promote Safety

This is the time of year when many property owners are planning home improvement projects, such as remodeling or expanding their home, adding a shed or fence, installing solar panels or a back-up generator, or finishing the basement.
Please remember that a permit is required for a variety of building, electrical, plumbing and heating/ventilation/air-conditioning projects. The permit and inspection process ensures that repairs and improvements are safe for the current property owner, and for future owners.
Even if a contractor is employed to do the actual work, the property owner is responsible for ensuring the proper permits are in place and inspections are performed.

Tennis and Pickleball Courts Open April 1

The tennis and pickleball courts at the Wind Point Village Green are now open! Residents are welcome to visit the courts during park open hours to enjoy the newly-renovated courts.
In the coming weeks, staff from the WP Department of Public Works will be installing the new wind screening on the perimeter fences.
What Is Pickleball?
While tennis has always been a popular sport, pickleball is gaining popularity quickly, both in Wind Point and nationally.
According to the USA Pickleball Association, pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
Pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It can be played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. It's played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes, and it can be played as doubles or singles.

Attention Wind Point Gardeners!

Do you have a "green thumb"? Or, are you a novice who'd like to up your gardening game? Either way, you're invited to join your fellow Wind Point residents with an interest in gardening to form the basis for a
Wind Point Garden Club. Club participants will share ideas, discuss their gardening challenges, and learn about this growing hobby.
Whether you already have a showcase flower garden, or you're still struggling to grow a good tomato, please plan to attend an organizational meeting on Tuesday, May 7 at 6:30 pm at the Lighthouse.

The Village Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on March 14, 2019. The following actions took place at the meeting:
- Appointed Casey Jones to fill the unexpired term of Robert Quam.
- Conditionally approved a Prescribed Burn Permit Application from Reliable Property Services, on behalf of Wind Meadows Corporation, for a prescribed burn on the 5-acre parcel south of the Wind Meadows pond and north of The Prairie School.
- Heard from the Deputy Clerk a recap of the 2019 Spring Primary Election, and an update on preparations for the 2019 Spring General Election.
- Received and discussed the February 2019 financial reports.
- Heard an update from the Village President on the recruitment of a Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer.
- Referred to the Parks & Facilities Committee a question about the closing times for the Village Green and the Lighthouse grounds.
- Established the dates and times of special meetings on April 12 and 13 to meet and interview finalists for the position of Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer (see above).
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 11
at 5:30 pm at the Village Hall. As always, the meeting is open to the public, and the agenda is available for download from the village web site 48 hours in advance.
