Policy

This week, Maryland state lawmakers approved a bill allowing doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to prescribe PrEP without obtaining parental consent as a way to prevent the spread of HIV among youth. ANAC Chesapeake chapter members joined other community activists in educating and advocating their state legislature for this policy change.

HOPE Act in action
This week, Ms. Nina Martinez became the first HIV-positive living kidney donor when surgeons at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore transplanted her organ to a recipient, who is also HIV-positive. This is the real-life result of 2013 legislation known as the HOPE (HIV Organ Policy Equity) Act, sponsored by Congresswoman Lois Capps, RN. ANAC members Willa Cochran, BSN, RN, CRNP, and Diane Brown, RN, MSN, are part of the HOPE team and are so grateful for Ms. Martinez's sacrifice, as well as her determination to spread the word about organ donation by people living with HIV. Read her story and convey her message to your patients, too!

Global
Mexico City Policy expanded
This week, the administration announced a wide expansion of the Mexico City Policy, also known as the "global gag rule." The announcement is complex and it's unclear how it will be monitored and enforced, but it prohibits a foreign recipient of U.S. global health funding from using its non-U.S.G. funding to support any work of a partner organization if that partner separately engages in abortion-related work with its own funding. This includes not only the provision of abortions, but also includes education and counseling or referrals for abortion services. The potential impact of this further restriction on women's health and reproductive health services on the delivery of HIV prevention and treatment and PEPFAR programs has been analyzed by amFAR
