Osceola Council on Aging: Mercedes Car Raffle

Wouldn’t this 2021 Mercedes GLA make an amazing family car? Buy a raffle ticket today and help the Osceola Council on Aging support our seniors, disabled adults, the disadvantaged, and families in poverty. It all starts with a $25 donation.
Years ago getting donations was easy. Mail a bunch of people, and wait for the checks to arrive. Recently, with COVID19 we are finding it more difficult to attain donations to support our residents. Hosting this Mercedes car raffle will help replace the many fundraisers we were unable to host this year.
It’s a win-win!! The raffle will help subsidize needed donations, and one lucky donor gets a chance to WIN A CAR.
The odds of winning this Mercedes are better than winning the lottery. So why not give to a cause you believe in? If not interested in the car raffle you are welcome to just donate.
Here’s how it works:

The Osceola Council on Aging’s 50th Anniversary Gala! We will look at the past 50 years and into the future. We will host 250 of Osceola’s Who’s Who in the community as we come together to share our story and highlight the programs and services of the Osceola Council on Aging.
"La femiglia e tutto" means "Family is Everything."

Want to be a Meals on Wheels volunteer?
We have been blessed with the most AWESOME, CARING, COMPASSIONATE and DEDICATED group of Volunteers! These angels have been there with us during our hardest times (COVID Pandemic). Day after day, some of them are doing more than a route, more than one day a week! WE ARE SO THANKFUL TO EACH ONE OF THEM!
Because of COVID, the number of people we serve has doubled, making the routes longer! We have had to split routes to make it more manageable for volunteers and to better control meal temperatures. This is the reason why we need more volunteers! We are in need of volunteers especially in Poinciana, Poinciana Blvd., Pleasant Hill Road, Good Samaritan, Campbell City, Holopaw, Old Canoe Creek Road, BVL area, 192 going toward Celebration, among others!

Hot nutritious balanced meals are served to active adults 60 years and older at numerous convenient locations throughout Osceola County. Meals are prepared fresh daily and contain one-third of the required daily allowance (RDA) for adults and comply with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs Guidelines.
The Senior Dining Clubs provide a place for older adults to gather for socialization and shared nutritious lunchtime meals. Senior Dining Sites are funded under the Older American Act and local funding. They are open to ANYONE age 60 or over! There is no charge for the meal, but a donation can be made to the program if the participants want to do so. Come share good conversation, fun games, and a meal with us.

If you're looking to improve your health, add Elior North America's BeWell eating approach into your wellness plan. Follow these six diet guidelines while also being mindful of portion size and sodium and limiting processed foods and trans-fat.
Emphasize Plant-Based, Whole Foods
Health benefits of a plant-based, whole food diet are plentiful-from decreasing the risk of disease and cancer to managing weight. They also have a lower impact on the environment compared to animal and processed foods. Examples: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, soy foods, herbs, and spices.
Eat Healthy Fats
Gone are the days of low-fat diets. We need a certain amount of fat in our diets to stay healthy, except for trans-fat. The healthiest fats are omega 3 polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. Examples: nuts, nut butters, flax and chia seeds, salmon, tuna, avocados, and walnut, avocado, or olive oil.
Add Lean Protein or Plant-Based Protein
Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. While high-protein diets surge in popularity, most people get too much. Fill your plate with plant-based foods and add lean protein in 2-3 oz portions. Or go veggie all the way and choose plant-based protein only. Plant-based protein examples: tofu, tempeh, soybeans, legumes, lentils, nuts, and seeds. Lean protein examples: lean beef, lean lamb, veal, lean pork, bison, venison, poultry, fish, and eggs.
Limit Added Sugar
High-sugar intake is linked to obesity, cavities and heart disease. Common culprits of foods high in sugar are ice cream, grain-based desserts, cereals, candy, and beverages, such as soda and sports, energy and fruit drinks. To avoid sugar-laden foods, check food packages for added sugar and choose whole foods, including fruit and water most often.
Fill-Up High Fiber Foods and Add Probiotic Foods
Fiber is a nutrient all-star; it feeds good guy bacteria to keep you healthy, maintains digestion and weight, and stabilizes blood sugar. Examples: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Probiotic foods are foods that are either naturally fermented or have probiotics added to help promote digestion and good gut health. Examples: kefir, yogurt, miso, kimchi, kombucha, and tempeh.
And...Drink Water and Get Moving
Water is our source of life; make it your beverage of choice. Get moving; adapt a purposeful exercise routine to improve or maintain health. Aim for 150 minutes or more of exercise per week or 30 minutes per day.

The beginning of summer brings the unofficial start of grilling season. For some vegetarians and vegans, however, this means making do at backyard picnics with the same old crudités or soggy green salads. But barbecues don't have to be a washout for those who don't eat meat.
Classic cookout foods can easily be transformed into delicious vegetarian or vegan fare.
Main Dishes
Be sure to offer some sort of plant-based protein, which can be as simple as a chilled bean salad! You'll also find meat-free burgers and hot dogs in most grocery stores. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, make your own homemade burgers out of beans, rice, grains or tofu. If you're making chili for meat eaters, simply make another batch without the meat; add extra beans and veggies to thicken.
Side Dishes
Grilled vegetables are satisfying no matter your eating pattern! Marinated and grilled portobello mushroom caps are not only tasty, they offer a meaty texture that's appealing to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Or skewer mushrooms, peppers, squash and tomatoes, then grill them until slightly charred.
Deviled eggs, potato salad, and macaroni salads are safe foods for Lacto-Ovo vegetarians, and vegans can alter some of these recipes by substituting with dairy- and egg-free products. Try a vinegar-based dressing for broccoli or green bean salad. Or make a simple chopped salad using canned chickpeas, tomatoes, cucumber and bell peppers.
For a more nutritious chip option, offer guests homemade kale or collard chips. Another traditional favorite you can enjoy is grilled corn on the cob.
Desserts
You can't go wrong with fresh seasonal fruit such as watermelon slices and an assortment of berries. If you're looking for something more indulgent, soy, almond, cashew and coconut milk-based ice creams command more shelf space in today's frozen food aisle, and for good reason: they taste absolutely delicious! And if you want to join in for some s'mores around the campfire, gelatin-free marshmallows guarantee your place. Grilling? Try peaches, mangoes, pineapples, bananas and other fruit. The heat caramelizes their natural sweetness.
On the Road
New vegetarians and vegans often find it difficult to ask hosts about food — what will be served and how it will be prepared. Most hosts, however, want their guests to enjoy themselves, so let them know you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. You may be pleasantly surprised with their response. Some hosts will even go so far as to prepare dishes that are vegetarian- or vegan-friendly or at least won't mind if you bring your own food.
If most dishes include meat, dairy, eggs or cheese, offer to bring food to share with the crowd so you won't go hungry. As a courtesy, let the host know, as there may already be a crowded refrigerator or limited oven space, in which case, you can bring your own cooler or decide on a different recipe.
You'll also want to follow good food safety practices. Bacteria grow rapidly when temperatures rise, and vegetarians and vegans aren't immune from food poisoning. Keep perishable foods in the refrigerator until you're ready to leave, and then keep chilled in an ice-filled cooler or by packing with frozen gel packs. Vegetarians who eat eggs and dairy products may keep these food items at room temperature for up to two hours at most (or just one hour if the temperature is over 90ºF) before they'll need to be refrigerated. The same goes for cut fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as cooked food.
If refrigeration is unavailable at your holiday site or it will be difficult keeping foods cold, consider packing non-perishable foods that don't need refrigeration such as whole fruits and vegetables (wash before eating), canned beans, chips, bread, crackers, nuts, peanut butter, mustard, and pickles.
