COVID-19 UPDATE

Top News
City staff has begun posting signs to let the public know about the City Council's decision to close the City's beach, including Dog Beach, on weekends and parking along the west side of Ocean Boulevard indefinitely.

The City Council took several actions at a special meeting Tuesday, March 31, to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Council members placed off-limits the dog washing station at Dog Beach at all times and asked staff to place hand sanitizer stations at beach access points during the week. The city is working to acquire the supplies, which are in high demand.

Council members also closed the playground equipment at all parks, the bandstand at Spreckels Park, and its tennis courts seven days a week. Most parks, however, will remain open. The City has shut down Sunset Park after many people were seen congregating at Sunset Park following the weekday beach closure. The no-parking on Ocean extends around Sunset Park seven days a week. The City Council will reevaluate the closures April 7.

The City will continue to work to ensure visitors are complying with the state’s public health order that enforces social distancing. The Police Department's mobile message trailers will have information about the beach and other closures.
The City is aware that residents attempting to view Tuesday’s special City Council meeting had some connectivity problems.

The live video online displayed an error message or a black screen. We apologize for any interruption residents had in viewing this important meeting.

The City also experienced the same issues during the meeting and staff was working with our government video streaming company, who was at City Hall for help with the teleconferencing portion of the meeting.

The City’s bandwidth appeared to be in good shape. However, the City had an estimated 500 people watching the meeting, a record for online meeting viewing for the City. Normally, a typical meeting may attract about 25 viewers.

The video streaming representative said he was not sure what the problem was but said that, due to the coronavirus quarantine, internet usage is off the charts and causing service interruptions all over not just here. He has assured the City that he is working to figure out a solution, so it doesn’t happen again.

The City will work to resolve the issue by the April 7 meeting. Remember all City Council meetings are broadcast live on Coronado TV (Spectrum Channel 19 and AT&T Channel 99).

The City plans to resume certain commission meetings in the coming weeks. However, they will be held virtually. The first meeting planned is the April 14 Planning Commission meeting. The next meeting will be the Design Review Commission set for April 22. The commission members will be using an internet-based meeting app and none is expected to physically attend. The meeting agendas will be posted as they normally are and members of the public are encouraged to comment in advance. The meetings are subject to cancellation depending on COVID-19.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
The Coronado Library, in a practical use of staff and equipment, has created a face shield for doctors and others at Sharp Coronado Hospital. Using the Library’s 3D printer, Library staff worked quickly to produce two prototypes for a National Institute of Health-approved face shield template.

Sharp reviewed the prototypes after the Library reached out. The hospital’s infectious disease doctor approved one of the two designs and production began April 1.

Each frame takes about 3 hours to print and a few minutes to assemble. The 3D printer enables staff to print out the frame, which is then assembled with foam and a disposable elastic to secure to the head. Each unit is wrapped and delivered to the hospital.

The face shields are difficult to find at this time.

The Coronado MainStreet board has decided to cancel the annual MotorCars on MainStreet car show based on public health orders. The event is held on the final Sunday in April. The event features classic, rod and custom cars and trucks, live music and food.

Much Ado About Nothing
This Thursday, April 2, the Library in partnership with local well-known actors will present a special reading of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." The City invites you to watch it live. The actors have appeared at the Globe and North Coast Repertory theaters and include Robert Pine of "CHIPs" and Dakin Matthews from the Broadway production of "To Kill a Mockingbird" along with a dozen others with San Diego connections. All have been interviewed by podcaster Nathan Agin on "The Working Actors Journey," a series of interviews about life as a professional actor. When the Library reached out looking for collaborators for new online content in the wake of the current pandemic, Agin got together with Library Director Shaun Briley to set up the YouTube live broadcast which will take place on Thursday, April 2  at 3 p.m. To watch the performance live, click the button below or link to the performance through the Library’s website.
Safe at Home but Not Alone
The City began its Safe at Home but Not Alone community outreach to connect with the community through programming on Coronado TV and via social media.

The City is broadcasting programs it typically offers at the Library, Spreckels Center and Community Center such as chair yoga, Library Story hour, Cultural Arts videos and Recreation dance programs for kids. In partnership with the Library, Recreation Department and Cultural Arts Commission, the City is creating new content daily. The City is engaging staff, local creatives and teachers to provide programming that otherwise would not be available to our citizens during this time.
