HIRN Emerging Leaders in T1D
"HIRN Emerging Leaders in T1D” is a new competitive announcement to provide support and protected time for senior postdoctoral fellows seeking to pursue studies that will enhance their transition toward independent research careers. This opportunity is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial that is itself comprised of a clinical trial intervention.

Save the Date!
Promoting the resources developed in HIRN is an important way to interact with the scientific community and ensure that precious investments are fully leveraged. A new webinar series has been created, open to the public, for those within or outside of HIRN to learn more about the reagents,
datasets, technologies, pipelines,
and protocols within this Network. Please save the data for our inaugural webinar on the development and use of Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) vectors scheduled for July 24, 2020 at 11:00 PST. Additional meeting information coming soon.

As many of you are aware, islet distributions from the Integrated Islet Distribution Program (IIDP) and other major islet distributors were paused in March due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. As of June 2020, the IIDP has authorized its islet production centers to resume islet isolations for pancreata obtained from donors that were tested and confirmed as negative for COVID-19. Islet distributions will resume shortly, and we expect to return to full production levels by July unless the COVID-19 pandemic causes new laboratory closures.
The Alberta Diabetes IsletCore officially re-opened on May 25 following approval from our Institution, completion of COVID-19-specific staff training, and implementation of strict safety measures. All pancreas donors within Canada are screened and tested for COVID-19. Our human islet isolation program will only be accepting donors with: No travel in the last 14 days; No known COVID-19 exposure in the last 14 days; and Negative COVID-19 test results in 2 independent samples. Please don't hesitate to contact either Dr. Jocelyn Manning Fox or Dr. Patrick MacDonald if you have any questions, or if you would like to obtain any samples from our biobank.
Remarkable, one of HIRN’s partner programs, nPOD, remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, in its 14 years of operations, despite hurricanes, flooding, and now COVID-19, nPOD has never totally suspended its operations in terms of case recoveries from organ donors. As a result of this, nPOD was able to recover a series of new cases that should be of interest to the diabetes research community, including those within the HIRN. Importantly, nPOD is currently in the process of testing for COVID-19 on all organ donor cases received since October 2019 to ensure all samples are safe for investigator distribution.
