UN WOMEN - NOW MORE THAN EVER
In Southwest Florida, as well as in communities around the globe, the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic are profound. And for women, who represent a higher percentage of lower-wage earners, part-time workers and daily laborers, the costs can be especially glaring.
Women make up a large part of the work force in many industries affected by quarantines, such as tourism, restaurants, local markets, and agriculture. Yet, women are dramatically underrepresented in economic leadership, and without effective advocacy, are less likely to have a voice in recovery and aid programs.
UN Women advocates with governments and civil societies around the world to "build back better" for women's economic resiliency. UN Women helps ensure we will have the resources needed to move forward after this crisis.
UN Women has a long history of supporting the rights of domestic workers, so was able to launch an awareness-raising campaign for employers to support domestic employees unable to work. UN Women also is seeking solutions in areas of the world where shelters have stopped work programs and vocational training. For example, in the Middle East, where programs are suspended, UN Women has been able to use their innovative block-chain disbursement method to help women access needed funds. This payment is all electronic and offers women greater financial independence and eliminates a bank visit.
