 :

Well, it wasn't pretty, but we made it! I said it last week and I'll say it again: everyone needs to get some serious rest this vacation! We need our students to return on February 24th healthy and strong and ready for the next academic stretch.

Because...as you can see on the progress reports that went home today...that there is academic work to be done! The combination of student illness along with new curriculum material has been a real challenge. We'll be getting right back into it when we return after vacation with the beginning of Iowa testing coming our second week back.

So, rest, relax, enjoy your vacation and we'll see you on the 24th. Happy Valentine's Day to all!

Peace and God's blessings,

Ms. Ann E. Dougal
Principal

It's Not Too Early To Prepare For Iowa Testing

Students in grades 3 through 7 will be participating in Iowa testing for 2 weeks beginning March 2nd and running through to March 12th.  As in years past, we recommend the following strategies to help your child prepare:

- Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies suggest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and concentration.

- Help your children by encouraging a good night's rest before exams. Children who are tired will have difficulty focusing on their work.

- Make the morning of test days pleasant. Stress will impair your children's ability to perform their best.

- Remind your children to dress comfortably, perhaps in layers, so that they are able to adjust to the temperature in the room.

- Ensure that your children make it to school on-time so that they do not miss any instructions and are allowed ample time to settle in and relax before the test begins.

- Don't be too anxious about your children's test scores. Although it is important to let them know that the tests should be taken seriously, it is also important not to increase test-taking anxiety.

- Don't underestimate your influence on your children. Taking an interest in what they are doing at school and helping them prepare for tests will certainly have a positive impact on them!

 Art Display

Getting Ready For Some Art Creativity!

Mark your calendars for the week of March 9th through the 13th. Why you ask? Because during that week, St. Michael's Academy will have an Art Show displaying the artwork from all of the St. Michael's Academy students. It will be displayed throughout the building. You will be amazed at the creative students that we have here!

Feel free to browse the artwork when you attend your parent/ teacher conference on Friday, March 13th!

PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT FOR NEXT YEAR
UPDATE

If you have a sibling of a current student that you are considering enrolling for preschool next year, please do so as soon as possible . Our preschool classrooms are filling up very quickly and siblings of current students have first priority over new students (if we know about them). We have several new families waiting to hear if we will have a slot for them.

Please note that the 3 days slots in the PreK-4 classrooms have all been filled by our current PreK-3 students who are moving up.  We do have 5 day and 2 day slots available.

We have also received applications for all the full time slots in the PreK-3 classroom. There are currently very limited 2 and 3 days slots available there.

To complete an application, please go to our website, smaspringfield.org. The "apply now" button is located on the left side of the homepage. When completed, you will receive an email with the additional items needed to complete the application.

Thank you!

Exploring the World Around Us in Third Grade

Third graders have been hard at work this year with a new Science curriculum!  If you visited during the Open House to kick off Catholic Schools week, you might have seen the products of their new knowledge: Planet Posters. They worked through two extensive chapters covering the solar system and became astronomers in the process. We all learned (teachers, too!) that a comet's center is shaped like...a potato! Ask your astronomer what they know about the planets now that we have completed our trip around the Milky Way.

Students are already excited to start the next chapter - exploring what makes up everything in our world.  It may seem like a daunting topic, but our third graders are up for the challenge! We are going to start with examining the Periodic Table of Elements and finding elements in our diets.  One lesson in particular will teach about chemical changes, and just wait until you hear about the experiment we have planned!

With their first go at the Iowa tests coming up at the beginning of March, our third graders have been practicing test-taking skills and strategies on the double!  February vacation will be a great break for our students to relax and spend time with their families.

Enjoy the week off!
