Addressing Learning Loss for Students
During yesterday's Academic Performance Committee meeting, Board members and District leaders discussed potential options for the upcoming 2020-21 school year calendar as a key strategy to ensure students are able to recover lost instructional time.

Using national data-driven learning loss reports , Superintendent Ray presented multiple options with  financial estimates and pros/cons for each. The options were developed after carefully listening to teacher feedback over the past few weeks, in addition to factoring in feedback from families who continually expressed concerns about lost instruction throughout the closure. 

SCS students missed the entire fourth quarter of the school year - a total of 44 school days - due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Initial analyses suggest students may return in the fall having retained 50 percent less than they would have by attending the complete school year. 
Dr. Ray was clear and emphatic in stating that "doing nothing is not a strategy to address learning loss." He said the calendar options are a way to begin the process of finding a solution to support our students.

Superintendent Ray also addressed some misinformation that has been gaining attention this week regarding teacher compensation in the event of an approved extended calendar.
He reiterated that this work is all about doing what's best for our students and said teachers will absolutely be compensated for every day they are asked to work, whether in classrooms or via distance learning. One-time funding from CARES Act dollars will be the primary source for employee compensation.
No final decisions have been made about the 2020-21 school calendar. As the District continues to plan for the new school year and works to address student learning loss, there will be more opportunities to collect input from educators and families.
