Daily Devotions from the St. Philip's Clergy Have Begun!
|
|
These reflections are posted to the news section of our website (
stphilipschurchsc.org/news
) Monday through Friday at 7:00 a.m. The Rev. Marc Boutan started off Holy Week by asking us what we could offer the Lord. What can you give Him that shows YOUR way of loving Him? Yesterday, the Rev. Ryan Streett explored Psalm 22 and what it tells us about God's character. Today, the Rev. Jeff Miller will be talking to us about the gospel assigned for Wednesday in Holy Week, Matthew 26. If you would like to receive a daily email with a direct link to these videos, please subscribe below.

"Hello!" again––from all of us to all of you!
|
|
Pictured above: "Virtual choir" round number two during yesterday's staff meeting. Some were singing "Happy Birthday" to youth minister David Gilbert, whose birthday is tomorrow; some were laughing at the attempt, and the rest were simply awestruck (or maybe 'dumbfounded' is a better word?). "Thank you for the most unusual singing of 'Happy Birthday' I've ever heard," said David. "I'll never forget it––I may want to, but I'll never forget it."
It's been great to touch base as a group at our weekly staff meetings and to hear how everyone is coping with isolation and working remotely. How are YOU doing? Please remember that your clergy and staff are here for you. Click the link below to let the clergy know how best to address to your needs. You may also reply to this email with any needs or concerns, or contact a priest directly.

Did you make yourself a palm cross for worship last Sunday? Thanks to the
Macmurphys' palm cross tutorial, the Warnock family was able to make quite a few––they even made enough to share with several neighbors! "It was very special," said Ashley Warnock, "something we would never have learned to do if not for the situation at hand––one of the many silver linings."

Virtual Worship: Fellowship on the Screen
by Tammy Gottshalk
|
|
If you are anything like us, you are finding the Sunday morning St. Philip's services an enormous blessing during these days of uncertainty and isolation! At the end of a long week where bad news seems to abound, it has been so reassuring and comforting to hear some good news on Sunday mornings––to hear words of hope spoken by our clergy, to sing (along with our choir members) hymns of praise to our good and faithful God, and to enjoy a kind of togetherness with one another while we remain––by necessity––apart. Thank you SO much to the clergy and staff for all the hard work that goes into making those services possible! They have been a lifeline for us!
On Palm Sunday, a few us thought we might try to enjoy the service "together" by watching it on a shared screen via a Zoom meeting. While we didn't exactly achieve our intended goal (we had hoped to be able to maybe sing hymns together during the service), we did have a wonderful time of fellowship together after the service ended. We discussed the service together and the things we learned, and we shared with one another some challenges and blessings of life in self-quarantine. It was true fellowship! And it was such a success that we decided to give it another go next Sunday!
If you are looking for creative ways to connect, you might consider a Zoom/FaceTime/Skype (enter your new favorite online conferencing app here) gathering before or after the service on Sundays. It's a little like having coffee together before Adult Forum on Sundays. (Um...except we each make our own coffee. And there aren't quite as many flavor choices. And we aren't quite so dressed up.) Why don't you give it a try?

We've got the next best thing, though––your clergy will be coming to YOU through your computer/iPad/phone beginning next week! More details will be coming soon––stay tuned!

Looking for a way to help?
|
|
Many of our parishioners are on their own during the COVID-19 crisis. Would you and your family consider helping by sending them a homemade card?
Contact Monti Hanger by email to get the names and addresses of those members who need some cheer. Take a few moments and make some cards letting them know you are thinking of them, hoping they are well, or wishing them a happy Easter. Or click below to download a card you can color and fold.
Put the finished card in an envelope and pop it in the mail. You have no idea how much joy this will bring!

Pictured above: Two cards made from scratch with much love by Virginia Layfield. Daniel, her brother, chose to color some printed cards and add a personal note (pictured below).

Can You Get Five in a Row?
|
|
Take a screenshot of the bingo board above, and then post it to your Instagram story, marking off your completed tasks using the drawing tools––remember to mention
@st.philips.church so that we can share! No Instagram account?
Email Lea Andrews with a list of items to cross off, and we'll post for you! Or you can play on your own––try to mark off the whole board!

Schedule Updates: Confirmation and Tea Room
|
|
Confirmation has been postponed, but the Rt. Rev. Mark J. Lawrence, Bishop, will still be with us to preach on April 19.
The St. Philip's Tea Room has been cancelled. A message from Hope Gamble and Amanda Ayers, co-chairs: "We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers. If you have already created something for the freezer, please consider donating to someone in need."

Are You at Risk and Unable to Leave Home?
|
|
The St. Philip's Joshua 1:9 Initiative is a response team for our church members while we are all experiencing the challenges of COVID-19. This is a united effort of the Compassion Committee, the Home Missions Team, the Disaster Relief Committee, and our clergy. We are here to help each other! Please contact us if:
• You are in isolation and need help getting groceries, prescriptions, running critical errands.
• You would like to hear from the church or a member of the clergy.
Email Monti Hanger or call Callie McLaurin at (803) 530-2323 if you would like help, and if you know of someone in our parish who does not receive these emails, please pass along this information.
Would you like to join our team? Please contact Monti or Callie.

Do you have a loved one in isolation?
|
|
Use the following questions as a guide as you seek to help family and other loved ones in isolation.
|
|
1. Can that person FaceTime (must have Apple device: iPhone, iPad, Mac)? Is it possible to get an iPad, set it up, and give it to that person?
2. Does the facility or home where he or she lives have an in-house Apple device to set up FaceTime for residents? In Myers Hall at Bishop Gadsden, the staff has set up a computer so that each resident can FaceTime with family at a certain time––no computer experience necessary.
3. Can your loved one receive emails? If so, does he or she know how to watch/stream the services and the daily devotions?
4. If not, is there a caregiver or someone else around that can receive the emails from the church so that services and information can be shared?
5. If the person is in a retirement home, can you stand outside a window and visit phone-to-phone across the glass?

Would You Like Someone to Pray With You?
|
|
To pray WITH someone:
Call Juanita Orvin, who will connect you with a prayer minister who will pray for your concerns over the phone.
To ask for prayer FOR someone:
Call Suzanne McCord, head of the prayer chain, and she will pass your request on to members of the chain.
Both options are always confidential.

Collect for
Easter Day:
O God, who for our redemption didst give thine only begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection hast delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through the same thy Son Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
