Jim's Blog: The Wonder of Generosity

James E. Hayes, D.Min., M.Div.,  Executive Director
" I experience generosity on a regular basis when I'm working with the generous people who support our work at the Center. I often begin conversations by asking people how they became connected with the Center in the first place. I've reflected on answers to that question in previous posts, but suffice it to say that a relationship was established in which the Center played a role in helping someone to find their way to hope and healing. Navigating Troubled Waters
Listening to the "Other"

"Good patriots carry on a lover's quarrel with their country."  -- William Sloan Coffin

Some of us feel like this: "I can't talk to my friends, my neighbors, my family! The tension is too much!" At a time in which our country is painfully divided, these are the struggles many in our communities are experiencing. Yet, beneath the tension there is heartbreak. Across the board, we feel deeply about the values we want to see our country exhibit, but we realize we are more painfully divided on the substance of the "values" than we realized.

So, how do we navigate our emotions, our relationships, our conversations?  Learn more and register at www.dmpcc.org/listen

Billie's Blog: Express Yourself

By Billie Wade, guest writer and PrairieFire graduate

Because self-expression reveals authenticity, it also means saying, "No," or "Yes," depending on our need at the time, the situation, or the people involved. Our ability to say "No" or "Yes" or to speak out is tied to our ability to self-express. Self-expression is about self-permission. We allow ourselves to say what we mean. We express our thoughts and emotions clearly with our words and actions. We let other people know they have violated our boundaries, and their actions are not okay..."  READ MORE

Happy March!

I hope you warm and dry, whether here in Iowa or wherever you may be.

Here at the Center, many volunteers are working hard for the 2019 Women Helping Women luncheon and there are so many fun surprises that come with this work. With permission, I am sharing with you a lovely note we received from David Egleston, who generously provided a Leader Plus gift ($500):

"I'm 74, officially retired but still working driving a school bus for the West Des Moines Schools because that's what I choose to do to stay productive and active. At this point in my life, I want to support areas of real need and which have helped me overcome difficult times in my life's journey.  Counseling helped me enormously in my life and admit that as a male I recognize that as fairly unusual. I know that women are usually more apt to use your service if it's available to them. So, I want to do my part in assisting toward that end.

"I usually like to participate in a low profile way. However, in this instance, maybe more men might recognize the fact that there is a need and if they have been fortunate in their own lives they can spread a little of their wealth?"

What a joy. So grateful for Mr. Egleston and for all of you. Thank you for sharing your gifts so others may seek hope and healing.

In gratitude,

Terri Mork Speirs
