Nevada GEAR UP Digest
June 2020

June 17, 2020

The summer has barely begun, and already it has become a time full of change. As Americans across the country strive for justice and peace, NSHE has released a statement regarding the death of George Floyd, which you are welcome to read below.

Additionally, we have received word from Gov. Sisolak this week that plans to reopen Nevada K-12 schools are in effect. We have included more details on the matter below.

Finally, we are both excited and saddened to see several members of our staff moving on to pursue new opportunities. We would like to congratulate Karen Pugh for achieving a new position as Internal Evaluator with NDE, and we would also like to thank Andrea Saavedra, Lizbeth Vega, and Stephanie Contreras for all their hard work as Ambassadors this year.

Congratulations everyone on helping our students get through their first challenging year of college!
NSHE's Statement on George Floyd's Passing covid
On May 31st, Chancellor Thom Reilly released a statement addressing the passing of George Floyd. In the statement, he states that " NSHE reaffirms its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and the belief it makes us stronger not only as a system of higher education, but as Nevadans too."

The full statement is available to read  here.
COVID-19 Update grading
Last Tuesday, Gov. Sisolak signed an directive allowing Nevada schools to resume in-person instruction.

The directive gives school districts, charter, and private schools the ability to choose whether to reopen for activities such as in-person instruction, tutoring, etc.

It states that all school employees interacting with others are required to wear face coverings, and students should be provided with individual materials to use in class. Additionally, health screenings and proper social distancing are to be implemented at schools that choose to reopen, especially on buses or at graduation ceremonies, the latter of which has been limited to 50 people at a time.
Onwards and Upwards!  coordinator
After a tumultuous and yet extremely successful year, we are sad to see some of our Ambassadors move on to new horizons. We would like to give special thanks to Andrea Saavedra, Lizbeth Vega, and Stephanie Contreras for all their hard work helping students make their college dreams a reality. We know that each and every one of them will do inspiring work wherever they go as they move forward in their careers, and we wish them all the best!

Additionally, we would like to congratulate our very own Karen Pugh for earning her new position as Internal Evaluator with NDE. She has done spectacular work helping to organize and improve GEAR UP NV, and we know she will do even better with this new opportunity!
