Frustrations of Traveling in a Chair
The Paralyzed Veterans of America put out a very informative article on traveling in a chair and struggling through airport security. Is that a problem you face as you travel in your
 wheelchair? A few helpful tips to make the process smoother include the following:
- Keep your cool! Remember that being patient with TSA security workers will go a long way.
- Know your rights; Visit the TSA website to see what rights you have. For example, TSA agents may never ask you to leave your wheelchair, or inspect your medical equipment.
- You may request further screening in private, if they call you aside due to any alarms you may have set off.
- The TSA offers a helpline (855-787-2227) to provide travelers with disabilities, medical conditions and other special circumstances additional assistance during the security screening process. Travelers are advised to call 72 hours prior to departure with questions about screening policies and procedures.

Checking In...With Ben Hetrick
It was 3 years ago this February that Ben Hetrick was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. We came to know Ben during his stay in Baylor Rehab. At that time Ben was engaged to Joy and living with his parents in Rockwall, TX. We came to his aid by making some modifications to his parent's home that allowed him to move back in and live comfortably. We widened a bathroom door and added two ramps into the home.
A little more than a year later we were able to help again when Ben and Joy, now married, were buying a home of their own! We assisted in remodeling the bathroom and kitchen to make it completely accessible for Ben. We put in a roll-in shower, widened the bathroom door, opened up the kitchen, and added two ramps to the exterior of the home. Ben also received a standing frame that had been donated to us.
Today Ben is very active and independent. He goes to school full time, pursing a degree in mechanical engineering, and often studies in his standing frame to improve that bone density! Ben can easily and safely be home alone thanks to the many modifications in his home. Ben stays physically active and fit by regularly riding his handcycle, and going for an occasional fishing trip!

Ben and I just celebrated our two year anniversary and Ben's three year mark as a paraplegic these past two months. When stopping to reflect on how much has happened, we thank the Lord for bringing you into our lives. We don't know what we would have done without you! You not only gave Ben independence, but you offered me a freedom, security and sense of relief in knowing he can have the same comfort in his home as me. We are so grateful for all you have done for us and the lasting friendship it has formed. We love you all!

Carla is living with a condition which has left tumors on her spine and affects her mobility. Sometimes she can walk with a walker and other days, she needs more help. NAF was honored to give an electric wheelchair to Carla. She came to Keller to pick up the chair last weekend and the smile on her face was priceless. We hope it makes her life easier.

Making Hotel Reservations Soon?
When traveling with your wheelchair and medical equipment, one can face m
 any challenges and discouragements. Hotels do not always have the specifics we are looking for that result in an easy and relaxing stay. Make sure to plan ahead when booking your hotel.
Hotels in the United States must abide by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regarding accessibility. The rules apply to properties built after Jan. 23, 1993.
The number of accessible rooms within a hotel is determined by its total number of guest rooms.
A 200-room hotel is required to have eight accessible guest rooms and only two must have a roll-in shower. Properties with less than 50 guest rooms aren't required to have any roll-in showers.
Typically, larger hotels and newer properties tend to be a better choice for wheelchair users. Most major hotel brands have begun providing accessible room choices on their search engines.
If you have questions about a hotel's accessibility features, it's best to call the property's local phone number and not the hotel brand's reservation line.
