Film: WRITING ON THE WALL: REMEMBERING THE BERLIN WALL
Etoile International Productions (56 min.)
WRITING ON THE WALL opens with the drama of November 9th, 1989: "a symbolic day marking the last gasp of the Cold War as communism sustained over seven decades met its final demise in Europe in a dramatic and bloodless revolution." Made during the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the documentary memorializes the history of the Wall as an oppressive structure dividing East and West Berlin from August 1961 to November 1989, whose collapse brought about a new united Germany. The film, shot on location in Berlin, captures the personal narratives of both leaders and citizens in the political power struggle.
Film: EDWINA SANDYS: BREAKING THROUGH,
BREAKING FREE AND REVIVING HUMANITY
Etoile International Productions (30 min.)
An artist internationally known for her stylized interpretations of human experience infuses her aesthetic view of art-as-life and life-as-art in all her creative endeavors. In response to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Sandys created two sculptures: BREAKTHROUGH and BREAKFREE. BREAKTHROUGH, installed at Westminster College in Fulton, MO, the landmark location where her grandfather Winston Churchill's famous "Iron Curtain" address and BREAKFREE in the Freedom Court of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, New York, commemorate the strength and vitality of the human spirit. As an artist, Sandys encourages others not only to reflect upon decades of history, but also to consider their own personal histories and their own creative paths that lead to breakthroughs in life.
